The demimonde of London is home to thieves, whores and beggars. Their uncrowned king is Peachum. He makes a good profit from the pity of the people by turning the town's poor into pitiable cripples and in return collects a large part of the money so begged. The second size in the shady milieu is the gangster MacHeath, called Mackie Messer. The loud-mouthed womanizer has risen to underworld power under the friendly narrowed eyes of the corrupt police chief Tiger Brown. Unfortunately, Mackie takes a liking to Peachum's daughter, Polly. The two secretly tie the knot. When Peachum finds out about the marriage, a bitter fight ensues between the two rivals: blackmail, bribery and denunciations are intended to save Peachum's business and Polly. "The Threepenny Opera" is a study about the defect in bourgeois society, because "first comes the food, then comes the morals". Brecht's malice written more than ninety years ago, as well as analyzes and comments on the economic turbulence of the present, appear here. Brecht was just 30 years old when he wrote his capitalism-critical opera, which "was intended to be as magnificent as only beggars could dream of" and "should be so cheap that beggars can pay for it". "The Threepenny Opera", based on the English "The Beggars Opera" by John Gay, owes its success above all to the music of Kurt Weill. From "And the shark has teeth" to "Ship with eight sails", the melodies of the "Threepenny Opera" have long since become classics. Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) was the most influential German dramatist, poet and librettist of the 20th century. He was a co-founder and leading theoretician of «epic theatre». His stage plays are performed all over the world to this day and his poems have been translated into almost all world languages. His best-known works include "The Threepenny Opera", "The Good Person of Sezuan", "Mother Courage and Her Children" and "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui". The German composer Kurt Weill (1900–1950) first gained notoriety through his collaboration with Bertolt Brecht (“The Threepenny Opera” 1928, “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” 1930 or “The Seven Deadly Sins” 1933). After the National Socialists came to power, he emigrated to the USA in 1935. In the 1940s he was a successful musical composer on Broadway in New York. Kurt Weill's work includes operas, operettas, music for ballet and drama, musicals, works for orchestra, chamber music, lieder, songs and chansons.
