В оперетте Иоганна Штрауса «Летучая мышь» царят вальс, вино и не омрачаемое ничем веселье. Даже тюрьма здесь не страшная, а весёлая: в неё идут почти добровольно и в ней же продолжают праздновать. Лейтмотивом всей оперетты звучат слова из дуэта Альфреда и Розалинды: «Счастлив тот, кто идёт мимо горя и забот». «Лёгкий» жанр при этом отнюдь не лёгок для исполнения: обе главные женские партии требуют виртуозного оперного владения колоратурой.

Российской публике «Летучая мышь» знакома по ленфильмовской комедии 1979 года с братьями Соломиными. Женские вокальные партии в ней озвучили солистки Кировского театра Лариса Шевченко и Софья Ялышева. Текст Николая Эрдмана и Михаила Вольпина (1947), на котором основаны сценарий фильма и нынешняя постановка Мариинского театра, отходит от оригинального либретто и представляет, по сути, отдельное, новое произведение, хотя и с сохранением большинства персонажей.

Но как бы ни различались сюжетные повороты, неизменной в любой версии и редакции остаётся головокружительная упоительная музыка Штрауса. Она, как писали критики после премьеры, «через уши проникает в кровь и струится к ногам, и даже самый ленивый слушатель невольно начинает кивать, раскачиваться и притопывать. ‹…› Можно заработать прекраснейшую морскую болезнь — настолько весь партер „качает“ от тех волшебных музыкальных волн, которые поднимаются из оркестра».

Waltz, wine and unclouded fun reign in Johann Strauss's operetta Die Fledermaus. Even the prison here is not scary, but fun: they go to it almost voluntarily and continue to celebrate there. The leitmotif of the entire operetta is the words from the duet of Alfred and Rosalind: “Happy is the one who walks past grief and worries.” The “easy” genre is by no means easy to perform: both main female roles require virtuoso operatic coloratura skills.

The Russian public is familiar with The Bat from the 1979 Lenfilm comedy starring the Solomin brothers. The female vocal parts in it were voiced by the soloists of the Kirov Theater Larisa Shevchenko and Sofya Yalysheva. The text by Nikolai Erdman and Mikhail Volpin (1947), on which the film script and the current production of the Mariinsky Theater are based, departs from the original libretto and represents, in fact, a separate, new work, although with the preservation of most of the characters.

But no matter how different the plot twists may be, Strauss’s dizzying, intoxicating music remains unchanged in any version and edition. It, as critics wrote after the premiere, “penetrates through the ears into the blood and flows to the feet, and even the laziest listener involuntarily begins to nod, sway and stamp. ‹…› You can get the most wonderful seasickness - the whole orchestra “rocks” so much from those magical musical waves that rise from the orchestra.”
