What would the blockbuster "Groundhog Day" look like as an expressionist, absurd film? And how would the film music sound like? Aribert Reimann knows. At the same time, one wonders how films like "Shining" or "Psycho" would have looked if the protagonists had to do without language. In the "Ghost Sonata" speechlessness is in the foreground: a morbid society has been gathering to eat for many years. The process is always the same. One day everything becomes different when one tries to unravel everyone's confusion - and yet everything is too tangled to unravel. The occult and mystical are also in the foreground here. The world is no longer depicted according to the principles of causality and logic, but follows a higher, metaphysical logic. Powers rule within it that appear more real than the powers of this world. The speechlessness of the ghost soup is an impressive symbol of this. Where the silence, the speechlessness sets in, the expressive possibilities of the music come into their own.
According to Kafka, art and books are not there to make us happy. On the contrary, he believed that “a book must be the ax for the frozen sea in us.” Strindberg and Reimann's “Ghost Sonata” is without a doubt an ax of this kind , but I know that the world would collapse if you were really sincere. «I believe that in art you can and must give in to this desire and say everything, being sincere and ruthless.
