Nicht um Tupperware oder Reizunterwäsche, sondern um nichts Geringeres als den Traumprinzen geht es drei Hobby-Hexen in der Provinz: der Musiklehrerin Jane, der Bildhauerin Alexandra und der gerade geschiedenen Journalistin Sukie. In Person des Kunstsammlers Daryl van Horne erscheint der vermeintliche Prinz auch und sieht verteufelt gut aus, schließlich ist er der Höllenfürst in Person. Ihre Viererbeziehung kratzt an der Moral des miefigen Kleinstädtchens Eastwick, personifiziert in der sittenstrengen Bürgermeisterin Felicia und ihrem Mann Clyde. Deren Tochter Jennifer liebt zudem ausgerechnet Alexandras Sohn Michael. Der mysteriöse Tod Felicias und neue erotische Eskapaden von Daryl gehen den Hexen dann doch zu weit. Den Teufel, da sind sie sich einig, muss man wieder loswerden. Aber wie?
Bei „The Witches of Eastwick“ stehen ein Buch und ein Film Pate. Der amerikanische Spießigkeit heillos entlarvende Gesellschaftsroman von John Updike bekommt seine höheren Weihen durch die 1987 gedrehte Horrorkomödie von George Miller mit hochkarätiger Starbesetzung von Jack Nicholson bis zu Cher, Susan Sarandon und Michelle Pfeiffer. Von der Oscar-Nominierung für die beste Filmmusik ist es nur ein kleiner Schritt zum eigenständigen, im legendären Londoner Drury Lane Theatre im Jahr 2000 uraufgeführten Erfolgsmusical mit frivolen Hexen-Trios und einem Hauch von Chicago zwischen Dixie und Big Band-Jazz. Mit den drei Hexen kehrt auch der versierte Musical-Spezialist Gil Mehmert mit dieser deutschsprachigen Erstaufführung ans MiR zurück.

It's not about Tupperware or sexy underwear, it's about nothing less than prince charming for three hobby witches in the provinces: the music teacher Jane, the sculptress Alexandra and the recently divorced journalist Sukie. In the person of the art collector Daryl van Horne, the supposed prince also appears and looks damn good, after all he is the prince of hell himself. Their foursome is rattling the morale of the stuffy little town of Eastwick, personified in the strait-laced Mayor Felicia and her husband Clyde. Their daughter Jennifer also loves Alexandra's son Michael, of all people. The mysterious death of Felicia and new erotic escapades from Daryl take the witches too far. The devil, they agree, has to be got rid of again. But how?
The Witches of Eastwick is inspired by a book and a film. John Updike's social novel, which hopelessly exposes American bourgeoisie, gets its higher sanctions from George Miller's horror comedy, shot in 1987, with a star-studded cast ranging from Jack Nicholson to Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. It is only a small step from the Oscar nomination for the best film music to the independent hit musical with frivolous witch trios and a touch of Chicago between dixie and big band jazz, which premiered in London's legendary Drury Lane Theater in 2000. With the three witches, the experienced musical specialist Gil Mehmert returns to the MiR with this German-language premiere.
