Moscow theater Novaya Opera named after E.V. Kolobova presents the first premiere of the 2021/2022 season - the opera The Dead City by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. This composition has never been staged on Russian stages. It is symbolic that the path of a new opera for our country begins precisely with the Novaya Opera Theater. Maestro Valentin Uryupin chose The Dead City for his first production in the status of chief conductor and musical director of the theatre. For the first time at the Novaya Opera, the performance was staged by  Vasily Barkhatov , one of the most successful and sought-after directors all over the world.

Summary of the opera

This story about the widower Paula, who mourns the death of his wife Marie, turns the house into a "temple" dedicated to her. He meets the dancer Marietta, who is remarkably similar to his wife. He is seized by a new feeling, but he is afraid to betray Marie's memory, to break his fidelity, and yet he succumbs to passion. Marietta wants to be the main woman for him, even allows herself to touch the relic - Marie's golden hair, moreover, she dances with them. Paul, in a rage, strangles her with these hairs. But all this turns out to be just a dream: at the end of the opera, Marietta again comes to Paul's house.

Stage director Vasily Barkhatov presents the author's concept of the play at the Novaya Opera. He interprets death in a metaphorical way: all the heroes of the play are alive, but Paul and Marie parted, and his wife seemed to have died for him. The action of the performance unfolds in three planes: reality, memories of life with his wife and meetings with Marietta. But do these meetings really take place or only in Paul's mind? The play of light that transforms the space and asymmetrical reflections will become a hint (or trick) for the audience.

History of creation

During the 20th century, the attitude to the creative heritage of the Austrian and American composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold(1897-1957) was rapidly changing, passing through the stages of enthusiastic recognition, oblivion and new discovery. The composer's father, the famous music critic Julius Korngold, had a great influence and even pressure on him, deliberately creating the image of a child prodigy. When Korngold was 9 years old, Gustav Mahler heard his work, he predicted a brilliant future for the young composer and advised him to continue his education with Alexander von Zemlinsky. At the age of 11, Korngold wrote the ballet The Snowman, which was staged at the Vienna Opera, at 14 - the first orchestral work, and at 17 - two operas. The critic Julius Korngold was known as an ardent opponent of new musical trends that were actively developing at the beginning of the century, which is probably why his son's work became a "late romantic swan song."

The political situation forced the composer to leave Austria and go to the USA. From director Max Reinhardt, he received an invitation to Hollywood to work on the music for the film A Midsummer Night's Dream. Thanks to this, Korngold's work entered a new stage: he became a famous film composer, in fact, he laid the foundations of Hollywood musical aesthetics. The composer twice won an Oscar for best music for the films Unfortunate Anthony and The Adventures of Robin Hood. After the war, Korngold returned to academic genres, but the post-romantic style no longer fit into the aesthetics of the new music. His work was forgotten, and the revival of interest in him began only at the end of the 20th century.

The opera "Dead City" by E.V. Korngold wrote in 1920 - at the age of 23! It is based on the play "Mirage", which, in turn, was created based on the novel by the Belgian symbolist Georges Rodenbach "Dead Bruges". The libretto was written by Julius and Erich Wolfgang Korngold under the pseudonym Paul Schott.

The Dead City is a fundamental score, a landmark work of the post-romantic era, which was a great success during the composer's lifetime. The first show - and immediately a double premiere: in Hamburg and Cologne on the same day. Then the opera was staged in many theaters, including the Metropolitan Opera, but was soon banned and fell into obscurity after World War II. At the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, the theatrical fate of the opera changed. Among the events of recent years are performances at the La Fenice Theater (Venice, 2009), the Finnish National Opera (Helsinki, 2010), and the Bavarian Opera (Munich, 2019). It is noteworthy that in the last two performances the cinematic nature of the music is emphasized: the directors create concepts referring to the films Solaris by A. Tarkovsky (directed by Kasper Holten) and Vertigo by A.

At the New Opera

The Dead City was staged by the creative tandem of Vasily Barkhatov (stage director) and Zinovy ​​Margolin (stage designer) recognized and established over many years. Together they have already created dozens of performances, many of which have received prestigious theater awards. So, Zinovy ​​Margolin is a four-time winner of the Golden Mask award. Vasily Barkhatov has been repeatedly nominated for the Golden Mask, and in 2019 he was nominated for the International Opera Awards as the best opera director.

Musical director and conductor - Valentin Uryupin . In 2021, the maestro became the chief conductor of the theater and set a course to discover new, unknown or forgotten compositions.

The performance at the Novaya Opera is an unusual solution from a staging and technical point of view. The action takes place in a pavilion built on the orchestra pit. And the orchestra is located behind the pavilion in the back of the stage. For sound balance, special reflective panels are placed above the orchestra, allowing you to balance the sound of the orchestra and soloists without using electro-acoustic amplification. The soloists are as close as possible to the viewer in order to enhance the emotional contact with the audience; for them, this performance is a kind of challenge and an unusual way of being an actor. The conductor interacts with the soloists using cameras and monitors. Thus, modern technical capabilities help to create a spatial solution for the performance that embodies its concept.

Московский театр Новая Опера имени Е.В. Колобова представляет первую премьеру в сезоне 2021/2022 – оперу «Мертвый город» Эриха Вольфганга Корнгольда. Это сочинение никогда не ставилось на российских сценах. Символично, что путь новой для нашей страны оперы начинается именно с театра Новая Опера. Маэстро Валентин Урюпин выбрал «Мертвый город» для своей первой постановки в статусе главного дирижера – музыкального руководителя театра. Впервые в Новой Опере спектакль поставил Василий Бархатов, один из самых успешных и востребованных во всем мире режиссеров.

Краткое содержание оперы

Эта история о вдовце Пауле, который оплакивает умершую жену Мари, превращает дом в «храм», посвященный ей. Он встречает танцовщицу Мариэтту, удивительно похожую на жену. Его охватывает новое чувство, однако он боится предать память Мари, нарушить верность, и всё же поддается страсти. Мариэтта хочет быть для него главной женщиной, даже позволяет себе прикоснуться к  реликвии – золотистым волосам Мари, более того, танцует с ними. Пауль в бешенстве душит ее этими волосами. Но всё это оказывается лишь сном: в конце оперы Мариэтта вновь приходит в дом Пауля.

Режиссер-постановщик Василий Бархатов представляет в Новой Опере авторскую концепцию спектакля. Он трактует смерть в метафорическом ключе: все герои спектакля живы, но Пауль и Мари расстались, и жена словно умерла для него. Действие спектакля разворачивается в трех плоскостях: реальность, воспоминания о жизни с супругой и встречи с Мариэттой. Но происходят ли эти встречи на самом деле или только в сознании Пауля? Игра света, преображающая пространство, и несимметричные отражения станут для зрителей подсказкой (или обманкой).

В течение XX века отношение к творческому наследию австрийского и американского композитора Эриха Вольфганга Корнгольда (1897–1957) стремительно менялось, проходя стадии восторженного признания, забвения и нового открытия. Отец композитора – знаменитый музыкальный критик Юлиус Корнгольд – оказывал на него большое влияние и даже давление, намеренно создавал образ сына-вундеркинда. Когда Корнгольду было 9 лет, его сочинение услышал Густав Малер, он предсказал юному композитору блестящее будущее и посоветовал продолжить образование у Александра фон Цемлинского. В 11 лет Корнгольд написал балет «Снеговик», который поставили в Венской опере, в 14 – первое оркестровое сочинение, а в 17 – две оперы. Критик Юлиус Корнгольд был известен как ярый противник новых музыкальных направлений, активно развивавшихся в начале века, возможно поэтому и творчество его сына стало «лебединой позднеромантической песнью».

Политическая ситуация заставила композитора покинуть Австрию и уехать в США. От режиссера Макса Рейнхардта он получил приглашение в Голливуд для работы над музыкой к фильму «Сон в летнюю ночь». Благодаря этому творчество Корнгольда вышло на новый этап: он стал известным кинокомпозитором, фактически – заложил основы голливудской музыкальной эстетики. Композитор дважды получил премию «Оскар» за лучшую музыку к фильмам «Энтони несчастный» и «Приключения Робин Гуда». После войны Корнгольд вернулся к академическим жанрам, но постромантический стиль уже не вписывался в эстетику новой музыки. Его творчество было забыто, а возрождение интереса к нему началось лишь в конце XX века.

Оперу «Мертвый город» Э.В. Корнгольд написал в 1920 году – в 23 года! В ее основе – пьеса «Мираж», которая, в свою очередь, создана по роману бельгийского символиста Жоржа Роденбаха «Мертвый Брюгге». Авторами либретто стали Юлиус и Эрих Вольфганг Корнгольды под псевдонимом Пауль Шотт.

«Мертвый город» – фундаментальная партитура, знаковое произведение эпохи постромантизма, которое при жизни композитора имело большой успех. Первый показ – и сразу двойная премьера: в Гамбурге и Кёльне в один день. Затем опера ставилась во многих театрах, в том числе в Метрополитен-опере, но вскоре была запрещена и после Второй мировой войны оказалась в безвестности. В конце XX – начале XXI века театральная судьба оперы изменилась. В числе событий последних лет – постановки в театре Ла Фениче (Венеция, 2009), Финской национальной опере (Хельсинки, 2010), Баварской опере (Мюнхен, 2019). Примечательно, что в двух последних спектаклях подчеркивается кинематографичность музыки: постановщики создают концепции, обращаясь к фильмам «Солярис» А. Тарковского (режиссер спектакля – Каспер Хольтен) и «Головокружение» А. Хичкока (режиссер спектакля – Саймон Стоун), исследуя тему иллюзорности и множественной реальности.

В Новой Опере

«Мертвый город» поставил признанный и сложившийся за многие годы творческий тандем Василия Бархатова (режиссер-постановщик) и Зиновия Марголина (художник-постановщик). Вместе они уже создали десятки спектаклей, многие из которых отмечены престижными театральными премиями. Так, Зиновий Марголин – четырехкратный лауреат премии «Золотая Маска». Василий Бархатов многократно номинировался на «Золотую Маску», а в 2019 году был номинирован на премию International Opera Awards как лучший оперный режиссер.

Музыкальный руководитель и дирижер – Валентин Урюпин. В 2021 году маэстро стал главным дирижером театра и взял курс на открытие новых, неизвестных или забытых сочинений.

Спектакль в Новой Опере представляет собой необычное решение с постановочной и технической точки зрения. Действие происходит в павильоне, построенном на оркестровой яме. А оркестр размещен за павильоном в глубине сцены. Для звукового баланса над оркестром размещены специальные отражающие панели, позволяющие уравновесить звучание оркестра и солистов без использования электроакустического усиления. Солисты находятся максимально близко к зрителю, чтобы усилить эмоциональный контакт с залом; для них этот спектакль – своеобразный вызов и непривычный способ актерского существования. Дирижер с солистами взаимодействует с помощью камер и мониторов. Таким образом современные технические возможности помогают создать пространственное решение спектакля, воплощающее его концепцию.
