It's rescue at the last second and love at first sight: When Prince Tamino is saved from a monster by three women just in time and sees the picture of an unknown beauty, he is spellbound. He embarks on a journey to find his love, which he learns is in the clutches of the sun priest Sarastro. And the bird catcher Papageno is also looking for his Papagena.

Mozart's opera is an abduction into the magical. She lets imagination speak where words are silent, love triumphs where logic fails, and finds nothing wrong with declaring a little magic flute to be the key to the world. At the same time, the opera touches on those fundamental questions that reflect what is deeply human. "The Magic Flute" combines wisdom with high philosophy and the lightness of being with the existential crises of the human soul. This is mainly due to its fairytale-like plot, which is close to popular theater and at the same time profound and, of course, to the wonderful music of Mozart, but also to the loving, deeply human drawing of the characters.

Director Christiane Lutz, who already showed a sensitive contemporary interpretation in her production of Massenet's "Manon" in the 2018/2019 season, could be won for the staging of this opera.

 

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) and Emanuel Schikaneder (1751–1812) met when Schikaneder was principal of what was then the Court Theater (now the State Theater) in Salzburg. The collaboration came 10 years later with the premiere of the "Magic Flute" on September 30, 1791 in Vienna. Mozart conducted himself, Schikaneder gave Papageno.

Christiane Lutz, who has attracted attention with productions at the Bavarian State Opera, the Theater an der Wien and the Semperoper Dresden, is producing under the musical direction of Leslie Suganandarajah. She realized Rigoletto at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival with stage designer Christian Tabakoff and choreographer Volker Michl. She has already worked with costume designer Dorothee Joisten on “Manon” in Salzburg.
