»The Magic Flute« is the favorite opera of the Germans. For a long time it has held the undisputed top spot in the performance statistics of German-language music theatre. Emanuel Schikaneder, director of the Freihaustheater in Vienna at the time, had secretly hoped for this success when he commissioned his friend Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791 to compose an opera with great appeal that was to fill his 1,000-seat theater. Schikaneder himself provided the fairytale libretto.

Auf diesen Erfolg hatte Emanuel Schikaneder, seinerzeit Direktor des Freihaustheaters in Wien, insgeheim gehofft, als er seinen Freund Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1791 beauftragte, eine Oper von großer Zugkraft zu komponieren, die ihm sein 1000 Plätze fassendes Haus füllen sollte. Schikaneder selbst lieferte das märchenhafte Libretto dazu
