The Magic Flute has enjoyed unprecedented popularity with opera audiences for over 200 years. Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto is based on a series of old fairies and ghostly tales, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart translated the truly enchanting story into magical music. It is the story of Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, held captive by Sarastro, ruler of the Temple of the Sun, and freed by Prince Tamino by passing three trials. He is accompanied by Papageno, the bird catcher, who wants nothing more than regular meals on earth than a Papagena - and that's what he gets.

The Magic Flute is Mozart's last opera. He finished the composition on August 8, 1791, and two days later the premiere took place in Schikaneder's suburban theater "Auf der Wieden". Mozart conducted, Schikaneder sang Papageno, Mozart's sister-in-law Josepha Hofer performed the Queen of the Night. The success was great; by May 6, 1801, the production will have been played a total of 223 times. On November 20, 1791, Mozart went to bed ill and died on December 5. But the music of the "Magic Flute" has become immortal.
