More than two thousand love affairs are not enough for the womanizer Don Giovanni! In search of new erotic adventures, he ends up in Donna Anna's bed. When their father, the commander, surprises them both and is killed by Giovanni, a turbulent night begins for him, at the end of which he is held accountable for his infidelity by everyone: by Anna, who vacillates between guilt and fascination; by her fiancé Don Ottavio, who wants to avenge her lost innocence; by Giovanni's former lover, Donna Elvira, and by Masetto, who has been cheated of his bride Zerlina, another "victim" of the seducer. Eventually, Giovanni the dead commander himself appears – and his high spirits are his undoing...

Barely a year after the acclaimed premiere of »Le nozze di Figaro«, Mozart had another success at the Prague National Theater with the dramma giocoso »Don Giovanni«, which premiered on October 29, 1787. For their second joint work, the composer and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte drew on the traditional figure of Don Juan: their title hero became a symbol of modern man in his unshakable striving for freedom. With psychological precision, Mozart gave musical form to his Don Giovanni, who is lover, rapist, freethinker and murderer in one and made him the immortal hero of the operatic stage – reason enough for Karen Stoneto stage this »opera of all operas« (ETA Hoffmann) personally at the end of her time as general director of the Magdeburg Theater.
