Repent, this is your last chance!" » Don Giovanni tries to extricate himself from the icy embrace of the statue of the Commander: « No, proud old man! - So it's too late! Flames erupt from all sides and the earth begins to shake under his feet. A chorus of demons shouts: "This horror is nothing compared to your sins, come, there is still worse!" In a cry of terror, Don Giovanni is thrown into hell, in the midst of tortured souls and their executioners. His career as a libertine completed on earth, here he is undertaking a comical odyssey in the underworld of opera in the footsteps of Dante and Orpheus, in the company of cursed or demonic characters borrowed from 400 years of repertoire.

Simultaneously a composer, director and videographer, the Danish artist Simon Steen-Andersen captures a major theme that has haunted the history of opera since its origins: the descent into hell. Mischievously playing with the art of collage, deconstruction and transposition, he blends in a new creation characters, situations and music borrowed from a large body of works from the lyrical repertoire, from Rameau to Boito via Berlioz, with the starting point is the final scene of Mozart's Don Giovanni . Aesthetics, eras and languages ​​intermingle over a spectacular dive into the bowels of the most infernal of machines: the theatre.

« Repens-toi, c’est ta dernière chance ! » Don Giovanni tente de se dégager de l’étreinte glacée de la statue du Commandeur : « Non, vieil orgueilleux ! — Alors il n’est plus temps ! » De tous côtés surgissent des flammes et la terre commence à trembler sous ses pieds. Un chœur de démons s’écrie : « Cette horreur n’est rien comparée à tes péchés, viens, il y a pire encore ! » Dans un cri d’effroi, Don Giovanni est précipité dans les enfers, au milieu des âmes suppliciées et de leurs bourreaux. Sa carrière de libertin achevée sur terre, le voilà qui entreprend dans les enfers de l’opéra une odyssée cocasse sur les traces de Dante et d’Orphée, en compagnie de personnages maudits ou démoniaques empruntés à 400 ans de répertoire.

À la fois compositeur, metteur en scène et vidéaste, l’artiste danois Simon Steen-Andersen s’empare d’un thème majeur qui hante l’histoire de l’opéra depuis ses origines : la descente aux enfers. Jouant malicieusement avec l’art du collage, de la déconstruction et de la transposition, il fond dans une nouvelle création personnages, situations et musiques empruntés à un large corpus d’œuvres du répertoire lyrique, de Rameau à Boito en passant par Berlioz, avec pour point de départ la scène finale du Don Giovanni de Mozart. Esthétiques, époques et langues s’entremêlent au fil d’une plongée spectaculaire dans les entrailles de la plus infernale des machines : le théâtre.
