The rich bachelor Don Pasquale wants to enter into a marriage with a young girl when he is old, not least to thwart the marriage plan of his spoiled nephew Ernesto and the destitute Norina. Dr. Malatesta, Pasquale's confidante and whisperer, suggests his shy sister from the convent as the perfect marriage candidate. Behind it there is none other than Norina, who gradually drives the old curmudgeon crazy with her spending mood shortly after the wedding. After Pasquale has received a slap in the face from Norina and finally threatens to lose her mind, the masquerade is dissolved and the cheated agrees to his nephew's wedding with relief.

The classic theater material based on Ben Johnson's The Silent Woman was set to music by Donizetti in record time in just a few weeks and became his greatest stage success, which conquered the world in a very short time. Director Valentin Schwarz received the Ring Award for his highly acclaimed production. In cooperation with the Opéra National de Montpellier, it can now also be seen at the STAATSTHEATER.
