Don Quixote, inherited from the golden age of classical ballet, is a vivid example of ballet Spain with incendiary ensemble dances, castanets, fans, polka dot skirts, roses and combs in women's hairstyles.
Despite the title, this is not an interpretation of Cervantes' novel. The basis of the plot and the reason for the dances was only one episode of the many adventures of the cunning hidalgo - the story of the failed wedding of the rich Camacho (in the ballet - Gamache) with the beautiful Kiteria (Kitri), the beloved of the village youth Basilio (Basil). And Don Quixote in the performance is far from being the main character by ballet standards, his role is pantomime-pedestrian, and all dance achievements are given to other characters.
The festive performance, captivating with temperament and virtuosity, was staged in 1900 (and in 1902 it was transferred from the Moscow Bolshoi to the Mariinsky Theater) by Alexander Gorsky based on the ballet of the same name by Marius Petipa, which adorned the St. Petersburg poster since 1871. At the dawn of the 20th century, the young and passionate choreographer Gorsky was fascinated by the ideas of Stanislavsky (who had just opened the Moscow Art Theatre) and in the name of “life truth” in ballet he turned the symmetrical corps de ballet, familiar to the productions of his older colleague Petipa, into a playing, experiencing, having fun crowd. The first spectators of the performance recalled: “On the square, this lively passionate crowd makes you believe to the fullest illusion in the sun, under which you so want to fall in love, tease each other, chase a beauty running away, hiding behind a fan ...”
Having preserved in his version the contours of the libretto, the music written by Minkus for Petipa and many choreographic pieces, Gorsky revised some scenes of the existing performance. The changes affected the most seemingly typical picture of Petipa's dream. In the performance of Petipa, Don Quixote saw that he was in a thicket of the forest and obstacles were growing in front of him. It is surrounded by thorny cacti, impenetrable bushes, terrible monsters, a giant spider is crawling along a huge web, trying to get to the knight. He stabs the spider, breaks the web and from the forest thicket enters a magnificent garden, where the beautiful Dulcinea rests, crowning the knight with a laurel wreath. Gorsky abandoned the elements of the thriller that preceded the dream and at the head of the classical dancers-visions, in addition to Kitri, who appeared to Don Quixote in the form of the beautiful Dulcinea,
Thanks to Gorsky, a street dancer appeared in the performance, whose black outfit set off the iridescent cheerfulness of the crowd. In the scene on the square, she was met by a whirlwind of uplifted cloaks, the splash of fans, and she performed a dance between the daggers that the bullfighters stuck into the ground. Although there was no such character in Petipa's performance, the idea to present a temperamental Spaniard among daggers in a dance that combines classical jumps and a characteristic "ornament of Spanish hands" belonged to Marius Ivanovich. In 1881, Petipa staged the ballet Zoraya, or the Mauritanian in Spain, in which, according to reviewers, the soloist "passed on pointe between a number of daggers stuck in the floor ... Effective, original and at the same time artistic." Gorsky saw "Zoraya" and decided to use a memorable find in his performance.
The episode at Petipa's mill took place not in a gypsy camp, as in today's performance, but among wandering artists. The scene with the acting out of the performance by actors in cardboard crowns, whom Don Quixote mistook for a king and queen, eventually passed "under the jurisdiction of the gypsies." And in the modern performance, the Gypsy dance is staged by Nina Anisimova in 1946. One of the most temperamental and colorful performers of the characteristic repertoire of her time, Anisimova did not skimp on catchy emotionality in her productions.
The modern Don Quixote is perhaps the champion of the ballet repertoire in terms of dance dissonance: it keeps the voices of Marius Petipa, Alexander Gorsky, Nina Anisimova and Fyodor Lopukhov, who in 1923 composed the Spanish Fandango “in the spirit of folklore”. Yes, and many dancers who perform Basil’s part can well be considered co-authors of the main character’s choreography - more than once individual ideas and tricks, designed to reveal the artist’s capabilities in all their brilliance, were fixed in the text of the variations. For soloists, Don Quixote is not only a bar of virtuosity, but also an opportunity to plunge into the element of the game, where even a small role can bloom with a whole bunch of humorous colors. And the audience this performance, in which genre scenes, characteristic choreography and pure classics coexist on an equal footing,

Доставшийся нам в наследство от золотого века классического балета «Дон Кихот» — яркий образец балетной Испании с зажигательными ансамблевыми танцами, кастаньетами, веерами, юбками в горох, розами и гребнями в женских прическах.
Несмотря на название, это не интерпретация романа Сервантеса. Основой сюжета и поводом для танцев стал лишь один эпизод из многочисленных приключений хитроумного идальго — история о несостоявшейся свадьбе богача Камачо (в балете — Гамаш) с красавицей Китерией (Китри), возлюбленной деревенского юноши Басилио (Базиль). И Дон Кихот в спектакле — далеко не главный герой по балетным меркам, его роль — пантомимно-пешеходная, а все танцевальные свершения отданы другим персонажам.
Праздничный, увлекающий темпераментом и виртуозностью спектакль был поставлен в 1900 году (а в 1902-м перенесен из московского Большого в Мариинский театр) Александром Горским по мотивам одноимённого балета Мариуса Петипа, украшавшего петербургскую афишу с 1871 года. Молодой и пылкий хореограф Горский на заре ХХ века был очарован идеями Станиславского (только что открывшего Московский художественный театр) и во имя «жизненной правды» в балете превратил симметричный кордебалет, привычный для постановок своего старшего коллеги Петипа, в играющую, переживающую, веселящуюся толпу. Первые зрители спектакля вспоминали: «На площади эта живая страстная толпа заставляет верить до полнейшей иллюзии в солнце, под которым так хочется влюбляться, дразнить друг друга, гоняться за убегающей, прячущейся за веером красавицей...»
Сохранив в своей версии контуры либретто, написанную Минкусом для Петипа музыку и многие хореографические куски, Горский пересмотрел некоторые сцены существовавшего спектакля. Изменения коснулись самой, казалось бы, характерной для Петипа картины сна. В спектакле Петипа Дон Кихоту виделось, будто он оказался в лесной чаще и перед ним вырастают препятствия. Его окружают колючие кактусы, непроходимые кустарники, страшные чудовища, гигантский паук ползёт по огромной паутине, пытаясь добраться до рыцаря. Тот закалывает паука, разрывает паутину и из лесной чащи попадает в великолепный сад, где отдыхает прекрасная Дульсинея, венчающая рыцаря лавровым венком. Горский отказался от предварявших сон элементов триллера и во главу классических танцовщиц-видений, помимо Китри, являющейся Дон Кихоту в образе прекрасной Дульсинеи, поставил ещё и Повелительницу дриад — придумав нового персонажа, сочинил ей «воздушную» вариацию в духе Петипа.
Благодаря Горскому в спектакле появилась Уличная танцовщица, чей черный наряд оттенял радужную весёлость толпы. В сцене на площади её встречал вихрь взметнувшихся плащей, плеск вееров, и она исполняла танец между кинжалов, которые вонзали в землю тореадоры. Хотя такого персонажа в спектакле Петипа не было, идея представить темпераментную испанку среди кинжалов в пляске, сочетающей классические прыжки и характерный «орнамент испанских рук», принадлежала Мариусу Ивановичу. В 1881 году Петипа поставил балет «Зорайя, или Мавританка в Испании», в котором, по свидетельствам рецензентов, солистка «проходила па пуантах между целым рядом воткнутых в пол кинжалов... Эффектно, оригинально и вместе с тем художественно». Горский «Зорайю» видел и решил использовать в своем спектакле запоминающуюся находку.
Эпизод у мельницы у Петипа разворачивался не в цыганском таборе, как в сегодняшнем спектакле, а у бродячих артистов. Сцена с разыгрыванием представления актёрами в картонных коронах, которых Дон Кихот принимал за короля с королевой, со временем перешла «в ведение цыган». И в современном спектакле Цыганский танец идет в постановке Нины Анисимовой 1946 года. Одна из самых темпераментных и колоритных исполнительниц характерного репертуара своего времени, Анисимова и в своих постановках не скупилась на броскую эмоциональность.
Современный «Дон Кихот» — пожалуй, чемпион балетного репертуара по танцевальной разноголосице: он хранит голоса Мариуса Петипа, Александра Горского, Нины Анисимовой и Фёдора Лопухова, в 1923-м сочинившего «в духе фольклора» испанское Фанданго. Да и многие танцовщики-исполнители партии Базиля вполне могут считаться соавторами хореографии главного персонажа — не раз индивидуальные придумки и трюки, призванные во всём блеске раскрыть возможности артиста, закреплялись в тексте вариаций. Для солистов «Дон Кихот» — это не только планка виртуозности, но и возможность окунуться в стихию игры, где даже небольшая роль способна расцвести целым букетом юмористических красок. А зрителей этот спектакль, в котором на равных соседствуют жанрово-бытовые сценки, характерная хореография и чистая классика, неизменно очаровывает щедрой танцевальностью и атмосферой беззаботной праздничности.
