De Othello-ouverture is de laatste van drie concertouvertures die de Tsjechische componist Antonín Dvořák begin jaren 1890 schreef. Waar In Nature’s Realm en de Carnival Ouverture de natuur en het leven beschrijven, daar gaat de Othello-ouverture over de liefde. Gebaseerd op Shakespeares tragedie verklankt Dvořák hoe de mens kan ruïneren wat de natuur en het leven hem hebben gegeven. Een duister hoofdthema (Othello) wordt in de expositie naast een groep lyrische neventhema’s geplaatst (Desdemona). Na elkaar in ‘zalige gelukzaligheid’ te hebben omhelsd, verliest Othello in de doorwerking de controle en vermoordt hij zijn vrouw. Na een moment van introspectie eindigt de ouverture op muzikaal vlak zo mogelijk nog onstuimiger met Othello’s zelfmoord.

De jonge Italiaanse pianiste Beatrice Rana brengt hierna Mozarts Twintigste pianoconcerto, geschreven in de donkere toonaard van re klein. De eerste beweging van deze ongelofelijk mooie, maar van onheil zwangere compositie, is bijzonder dramatisch. Dezelfde noodlottige sfeer vindt men terug in de Don Giovanni-ouverture en het Requiem – beide eveneens geschreven in de toonaard van re klein. De tweede beweging, een romance, biedt verlichting en laat de wereld terug baden in een lieflijk licht. Met haar extreme dynamieken en een ongelofelijke stuwkracht die naar een stralend einde in re groot leidt, is de laatste beweging bijna Beethoveniaans.

Anti-Tsjechisch sentiment verhinderde de première van Antonín Dvořáks Zesde symfonie in Wenen, ook al was zij geschreven voor Hans Richter, chef-dirigent van de Wiener Philharmoniker. Groeiend nationalisme had Dvořák in een paar jaar tijd van een geaccultureerde Duitser veranderd in een Tsjech die een te grote concurrentie vormde voor de in Wenen heersende Germaanse cultuur. Na een uiterst succesvolle première in Praag won Dvořáks Zesde symfonie in de rest van Europa echter snel aan populariteit. Velen lieten zich bekoren door de uitgebalanceerde mix tussen het modernisme van Liszt en Wagner, het conservatisme van Brahms en heel wat Tsjechische volkselementen (zoals het gebruik van een Boheemse dans, de furiant, in de derde beweging).

L’ouverture d’Othello est la dernière des trois ouvertures de concert écrites par le compositeur tchèque Antonín Dvořák au début des années 1890. Alors que In Nature’s Realm et l’Ouverture du Carnaval décrivent la nature et la vie, l’ouverture d’Othello traite de l’amour. En se basant sur la tragédie de Shakespeare, Dvořák dépeint comment l’homme peut ruiner ce que la nature et la vie lui ont donné. Un thème principal sombre (Othello) est juxtaposé dans l’exposition avec un groupe de thèmes secondaires lyriques (Desdemona). Après s’être embrassés dans un « bonheur béat », Othello perd le contrôle et tue sa femme dans l’exposition. S’ensuit un moment d’introspection, avant que l’ouverture ne s’achève de manière encore plus tumultueuse avec le suicide d’Othello.

La jeune pianiste italienne Beatrice Rana interprète ensuite le Vingtième concerto pour piano de Mozart, écrit dans la tonalité sombre de ré mineur. Le premier mouvement de cette composition d’une incroyable beauté, mais d’un caractère funeste, est particulièrement dramatique. On retrouve la même atmosphère funeste dans l’ouverture de Don Giovanni et le Requiem – tous deux également écrits dans la tonalité ré mineur. Le deuxième mouvement, une romance, offre un soulagement et permet de baigner à nouveau le monde d’une belle lumière. Avec sa dynamique extrême et son élan incroyable menant à une fin radieuse en ré majeur, le dernier mouvement est presque beethovénien.

Le sentiment anti-tchèque a empêché la première de la Sixième symphonie d’Antonín Dvořák à Vienne, bien qu’elle ait été écrite pour Hans Richter, chef principal de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Vienne. En quelques années, le nationalisme croissant avait transformé Dvořák d’un Allemand acculturé en un Tchèque qui représentait une trop grande concurrence pour la culture germanique prévalant à Vienne. Cependant, après une première très réussie à Prague, cette Sixième symphonie a rapidement gagné en popularité dans le reste de l’Europe. Beaucoup ont été charmés par le mélange équilibré entre le modernisme de Liszt et de Wagner, le conservatisme de Brahms et de nombreux éléments folkloriques tchèques (comme l’utilisation d’une danse bohémienne, le furiant, dans le troisième mouvement).

MOZART’S DARK SIDE

The Othello overture is the last of three concert overtures written by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák in the early 1890s. While In Nature’s Realm and the Carnival Overture describe nature and life, the Othello overture deals with love. Inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy, Dvořák depicts how man can ruin what nature and life have given him. A dark main theme (Othello) is juxtaposed in the exposition with a group of lyrical secondary themes (Desdemona). After kissing in ‘bliss’, Othello loses control and kills his wife in the exposition. After a moment of introspection, the overture comes to an even more tumultuous end with Othello’s suicide.

The young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana then performs Mozart’s Twentieth Piano Concerto, written in the sombre key of D minor. The first movement of this incredibly beautiful, yet fateful composition is particularly dramatic. The same ominous mood is found in the Overture to Don Giovanni and the Requiem – both also written in the key of D minor. The second movement, a romance, offers relief and allows the world to be bathed in a beautiful light again. With its extreme dynamics and incredible momentum leading to a radiant ending in D major, the last movement is almost Beethovenian.

Anti-Czech sentiment prevented the premiere of Antonín Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony in Vienna, although it was written for Hans Richter, principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic. Within a few years, growing nationalism had transformed Dvořák from an acculturated German into a Czech who was too much competition for the Germanic culture prevalent in Vienna. However, after a very successful premiere in Prague, Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony quickly gained popularity in the rest of Europe. Many were charmed by the balanced blend of Liszt and Wagner’s modernism, Brahms’ conservatism and many Czech folk elements (such as the use of a Bohemian dance, the furiant, in the third movement).
