Rehearsals for the premiere of Nestor Taylor's opera Eleni have begun in the ballet hall of the Theater Erfurt. The oratorio-like composition is based on real events and, with emotionally charged arias and duets as well as effective choral tableaux, takes us back to the late 1940s when a brutal civil war divided Greece and claimed hundreds of thousands of victims - including the title heroine Eleni Gatzoyiannis, a selfless mother and farmer, who only wanted to bring her five children to safety - and had to pay for it with her life. Nestor Taylors oratorienhafte Oper erzählt die auf wahren Begebenheiten beruhende Geschichte einer selbstlosen Mutter, die inmitten eines brutalen Kriegs aus Liebe zu ihren Kindern zur tragischen Heldin wird.

Während der 1940er Jahre tobt in Griechenland ein Bürgerkrieg zwischen kommunistischen Partisanen und rechtsgerichteten Regierungstruppen. Unglücklicherweise liegt das nordgriechische Bergdorf Lia, eine festgefügte, streng patriarchalisch geordnete und abergläubische Gemeinschaft, in der die junge Bäuerin Eleni Gatzoyiannis allein fünf Kinder großzieht, auf dem Marschweg der kommunistischen Kämpfer. Die Dorfbewohner müssen fortan um ihr Leben fürchten: Wer den Partisanen nicht zu Diensten ist, wird gefoltert und hingerichtet. Lebensmittel werden konfisziert, Dorfbewohner zur Arbeit gezwungen und nicht nur Männern, sondern auch den halbwüchsigen Töchtern Elenis sowie anderen jungen unverheirateten Frauen droht die Zwangsrekrutierung. Um ihre beiden Ältesten vor diesem Schicksal zu bewahren und zu verhindern, dass die jüngeren Geschwister in kommunistische „Bruderstaaten“ zwangsverschickt werden, begehrt Eleni gegen den Roten Terror auf. Sie organisiert die Flucht ihrer Kinder nach Amerika. Doch dafür muss sie, wie auch hunderttausende andere griechische Zivilisten, mit dem Leben bezahlen.

Berührende Arien und Duette, wirkungsvolle Chornummern und erschütternde Szenen: Basierend auf dem autobiografischen Bestseller von Nicholas Gage (geb. Nikolaos Gatzoyiannis), dem jüngsten Sohn der Protagonistin, ist Eleni ein packendes Bekenntnis gegen die Schrecken des Krieges und die damit verbundenen Gräueltaten.

Nestor Taylor's oratorio-like opera tells the true story of a selfless mother who becomes a tragic heroine in the midst of a brutal war for the love of her children.

During the 1940s, a civil war raged in Greece between communist partisans and right-wing government troops. Unfortunately, the northern Greek mountain village of Lia, a tight-knit, strictly patriarchal and superstitious community where young peasant woman Eleni Gatzoyiannis is raising five children alone, lies on the marching path of the communist fighters. From then on, the villagers had to fear for their lives: those who did not serve the partisans were tortured and executed. Food is confiscated, villagers are forced to work and not only men but also the teenage daughters Elenis and other young unmarried women are threatened with forced recruitment. To save and prevent her two eldest from this fate, that the younger siblings are forcibly deported to communist “fraternal states”, Eleni protests against the Red Terror. She organizes her children's escape to America. But for this, like hundreds of thousands of other Greek civilians, she has to pay with her life.
