The most famous Polish opera written by Stanisław Moniuszko. The work, first in a two-act version, premiered in Vilnius in 1848. The four-act version, the best known, was presented in Warsaw ten years later. Halka 's story is based on a typically romantic conflict of great love and the inability to fulfill it.
