Already with its first performance in 1893, Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy-tale opera, Gingerbread Cottage, won the hearts of small and large audiences on German and subsequently on world stages. It can be said that to this day it has been a great success in the theatrical prominence of opera houses. It is a work that has remained unique in its kind. Admiration is aroused not only by the richly instrumented to Wagnerian music as opposed to a simple story, but also by an imaginary world full of fairy-tale magic.
The premiere of the three-act opera took place on December 23, 1893 at the Hoftheater in Weimar and was conducted by the famous Richard Strauss. He said on the sidelines of Perník's cottage that it was "a masterpiece of the highest quality. New, original and authentic German work. "
In October, Gingerbread Cottage will be performed at the State Opera for the first time almost 120 years since its world premiere.
