Who would have believed that there are two such unsurpassed masterpieces of opera literature that can be attributed to a simple barber boy. Figaro is an intriguer with a cunning, twisted mind, today we would say: the eternal winning type, born of the imagination of the French playwright Beaumarchais, and even a bit like himself. Beaumarchais, even this nickname - with which he was later elevated to noble rank - is a kind of disguise: it means "good business" in Hungarian. Originally by Pierre Augustin Caron, XV. King Louis's watchmaker, expert in musical instruments, harpist and lute artist, music teacher to the royal grandchildren, businessman with excellent sense and not at all spotless reputation, arms dealer and spy, sudden prison inmate, experienced practitioner of corruption and later its great exposer, uninhibited court shoe-licker, but at the same time, he is a merciless critic of the aristocracy, one of the intellectual preparers of the revolution, and finally, but above all, a talented and successful stage author. What else could come out of the pen of such a person than a scintillatingly witty, simultaneously sarcastic and emotional piece that has inspired the stage and composers for decades. His two most successful works are The Barber of Seville (1775) and its sequel, The Marriage of Figaro (1778). The latter was chosen as an operatic theme by Mozart (1786), the former by Rossini (1816) (as well as many others, by the way). From the 1810s, a veritable "Rossini fever" was burning in Europe, new and new works of his were eagerly awaited on stages playing Italian operas. And the important cities of Europe were full of them. Still, success was not immediately guaranteed, it was difficult to be in the favor of an audience that always wanted something fresh, but at the same time well-known. The Barber of Seville didn't even succeed at the Rome premiere, because Rossini had to reckon with all this, as well as operatic cliques and competition. But from the second performance on, no one could resist the opera's overwhelming power, momentum, great plot twists and, above all, its melodies and tireless music. According to the great successor, Verdi, the overflowing wealth of genuine musical ideas characterizes the barber opera, and Beethoven, when they met in 1822 (Rossini was exceptionally well received by the lonely,

The love of Count Almaviva and the beautiful bourgeois girl Rozina is helped to victory by the fallen barber Figaro. For centuries, there has been a great comedy tradition on the stages of the character of the able-bodied servant helping his master or the maid taking care of his mistress. Beaumarchais, then the creator of Rossini's text (Cesare Sterbini), did nothing but fill this tradition with real, full-blooded characters, provided it with a story rich in unexpected twists, disguises, longing for love, and bags of money slipped into handfuls. Interested parties can learn about the exciting twists and turns of the story and what kind of music Rossini put together for this comedy in just a few weeks (as he himself mentioned) from the upcoming sale of the Fabulous Opera, which will be illustrated with lots of live music.

Ki hinné, hogy az operairodalomnak két olyan felülmúlhatatlan remekműve is van, amely egy egyszerű borbélylegénynek köszönheti létrejöttét. Figaro a furfangos, csavaros eszű intrikus, ma úgy mondanánk: az örök nyerő típus, Beaumarchais francia színműíró fantáziájának szülötte, sőt kissé önmagának is hasonmása. Beaumarchais, már ez a becenév is - mellyel később nemesi rangra emeltetett - egyfajta álöltözet: magyarul "jó üzlet"-et jelent. Eredetileg Pierre Augustin Caron, XV. Lajos király órásmestere, a zenélő szerkezetek szakértője, egyben hárfa és lantművész, a királyi unokák zenetanítója, kiváló érzékű és cseppet sem makulátlan hírű üzletember, fegyverkereskedő és kém, hirtelen börtöntöltelék, a korrupció gyakorlott alkalmazója, majd nagy leleplezője, kevéssé gátlásos udvari talpnyaló, de ugyanakkor az arisztokrácia kíméletlen bírálója, a forradalom egyik szellemi előkészítője, végül pedig, de mindenekelőtt nagytehetségű és sikerű színpadi szerző. Mi más is kerülhetne ki egy ilyen ember tolla alól, mint sziporkázóan szellemes, egyszerre gúnyos és érzelmes darab, amely évtizedeken át megihlette a színpadot, és a zeneszerzőket. Két legsikeresebb műve A sevillai borbély (1775) és annak folytatása, a Figaro házassága (1778). Utóbbit Mozart (1786), előbbit Rossini (1816) választotta operatémának (egyébként még sokan mások is).

Az 1810-es évektől valóságos “Rossini-láz” égett Európában, alig várták újabb és újabb műveit az olasz operákat játszó színpadokon. Márpedig ezekkel tele voltak Európa fontos városai.  Mégsem volt azonnal garantált a siker, nehéz volt a mindig frissre, ugyanakkor jól ismertre vágyó közönség kegyében járni. A sevillai borbély római bemutatóján nem is sikerült, mert Rossininek számolnia kellett mindezek mellett még az operai klikk-harcokkal, konkurenciával is. De a második előadástól kezdve senki sem tudott többé ellenállni az opera elsöprő erejének, lendületének, remek cselekményfordulatainak, és mindenekelőtt dallamainak, megunhatatlan zenéjének. A nagy utód, Verdi szerint a valódi zenei ötletek túláradó gazdagsága jellemzi a borbély-operát, Beethoven pedig, amikor 1822-ben találkoztak (Rossinit kivételesen fogadta a magányos, emberkerülő mester) annyit mondott: még sok ilyen borbélyt írjon fiatalember!

Almaviva gróf és a szép polgárleány, Rozina szerelmét a talpraesett borbély, Figaro segíti győzelemre. Már évszázadok óta nagy vígjátéki hagyománya élt a színpadokon a gazdáját segítő rátermett szolga, vagy úrnőjére vigyázó szobalány figurájának. Beaumarchais, majd Rossini szövegkönyvének elkészítője (Cesare Sterbini) nem tett egyebet, mint ezt a hagyományt töltötte meg igazi, vérbő szereplőkkel, látta el váratlan fordulatokban, álöltözetekben, szerelmi sóvárgásban, és marokba csúsztatott pénzes zacskókban gazdag történettel. Hogy melyek a történet izgalmas, csavaros fordulatai, és micsoda zenét hozott össze Rossini ehhez a komédiához mindössze néhány hét alatt (ahogy ő maga emlegette), azt megismerhetik az érdeklődők a Mesés Opera soron következő eladásából, amelyet sok élő zenével illusztrálunk majd, hogy felidézhető legyen e remekmű keltette páratlan operai hangulat.
