Il Barbiere di Siviglia tells the story of the tricks that Count Almaviva plays to abduct the beautiful Rosina.

The biggest obstacle is that Rosina is under the strict supervision of her guardian doctor Bartolo, who wants to marry her. In various disguises, the count causes confusion and is able to woo Rosina at the same time. He is helped in this by the cunning hairdresser and devil hunter Figaro. Bartolo becomes suspicious and the matter becomes even more complicated when Rosina wants to flee with Lindoro. Bartolo tries to convince her that Lindoro and Count Almaviva are one and the same person, but she only finds out much later. At the end of the opera, the count and Rosina get married – much to Bartolo's disappointment. However, the newlyweds leave him Rosina's dowry.

Il Barbiere di Siviglia vertelt het verhaal van de heksentoeren die graaf Almaviva uithaalt om de mooie Rosina te schaken.

Het grootste obstakel is dat Rosina onder streng toezicht staat van haar voogd dokter Bartolo, die met haar wil trouwen. In verschillende vermommingen zaait de graaf verwarring en kan hij tegelijkertijd Rosina het hof maken. Hij wordt daarbij geholpen door de sluwe kapper en duivelstoejager Figaro. Bartolo krijgt argwaan en de zaak wordt nog ingewikkelder wanneer Rosina wil vluchten met Lindoro. Bartolo probeert haar te overtuigen van het feit dat Lindoro en graaf Almaviva één en dezelfde persoon zijn, maar daar komt zij pas veel later achter. Aan het eind van de opera trouwen de graaf en Rosina – tot grote teleurstelling van Bartolo. De jonggehuwden  laten hem echter Rosina’s bruidsschat na.
