he music and libretto of the comic opera The Bell, or the Apothecary's Wedding Night, was written by Gaetano Donizetti in 1836. The composer composed his new masterpiece easily and cheerfully, reveling in the process and laughing at his own inventive jokes and music, which amusingly “jumps”, obeying the rhythm of the verses. Just as easily, his elegant comic opera entered the repertoire of many theater groups and became on a par with other operatic masterpieces of the composer.

The plot of the play is simple and funny. The venerable pharmacist Annibala and his new wife, the beautiful Serafina, will have their first wedding night. However, the delinquent lover of Serafina, young Enrico, interferes in the marital idyll of the newlyweds, planning to prevent the pharmacist from entering his wife's bedroom. He constantly rings the bell and comes to Annibale's pharmacy in various guises, playing an opponent with the ingenuity of a true lover.
