The only work by Cimarosa still regularly performed, it is perhaps among the best opere buffe of the eighteenth century. The Secret Marriage , music by Domenico Cimarosa to a libretto by Giovanni Bertati, consists of two acts based on the play The Clandestine Marriage by George Colman and David Garrick (1776). The protagonist is the rich Bolognese merchant Geronimo, a social climber whose family includes his daughters Elisetta and Carolina, his sister Fidalma and the secretary Paolino, Carolina's secret husband. Before true love triumphs, many misunderstandings and twists and turns take place. The debut took place on February 7, 1792 at the Viennese Hofburg theater, in the presence of Emperor Leopold II; but the urban legend of a full-length encore on the same night lacks proof.
