Il matrimonio segreto
What happened on February 7, 1792 in the Vienna Court Theater is probably unique in the history of opera: after the premiere of Domenico Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto , Emperor Leopold II not only demanded the repetition of individual musical numbers, but also wanted to see the entire opera again and arranged the second performance for the same evening. The incident is certainly unusual - but anyone who has seen this turbulent buffo opera full of unbeatable situation comedy and heard Cimarosa's music, which is so sparkling with wit and charm, will understand the Emperor's wish only too well and at most regret that opera evenings are so long these days are no longer possible.

Was sich am 7. Februar 1792 im Wiener Hoftheater abgespielt hat, dürfte in der Operngeschichte einmalig sein: Kaiser Leopold II. verlangte nach der Uraufführung von Domenico Cimarosas Il matrimonio segreto nicht nur die Wiederholung einzelne Musiknummern, sondern wollte gleich die ganze Oper noch einmal sehen und ordnete die zweite Aufführung noch für denselben Abend an. Der Vorfall ist gewiss ungewöhnlich – aber wer diese turbulente Buffo-Oper voller unschlagbarer Situationskomik gesehen und Cimarosas von Witz und Charme nur so sprühende Musik gehört hat, wird den Wunsch des Kaisers nur zu gut verstehen und allerhöchstens bedauern, dass in unseren Tagen so lange Opernabende nicht mehr möglich sind.
