Il Turco in Italia , a funny drama in two acts on a libretto by Felice Romani, was performed for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala on 14 August 1814, in the cast Filippo Galli, Francesca Maffei Festa, Luigi Paccini, Giovanni David, Pietro Vasoli, Adelaide Carpano , Gaetano Pozzi, and under the direction of Alessandro Rolla. In balance between comedy and refinement, the most Mozartian of Rossini's works shares with the Italian in Algiers, debuted the year before, the taste of "turcheria", more in the formal aspect than in the dramaturgical aspect, while the music is completely new (despite what the critics of the time wrote) just as it is quite unique - and was pointed out for his ferocity - his ability to mock Italian customs. It is in the twentieth century that the opera enters the repertoire, thanks to the masterful interpretations in the part of Fiorilla offered by Maria Callas. The protagonists of the staging with the historical scenes created by Emanuele Luzzati together with the costumes of Santuzza Calì, at the end of the 2022 edition of the course, will be the Soloists of the Academy of high vocal improvement and professional insertion for opera singers of the Carlo Felice Theater Foundation, whose artistic direction has been entrusted by the Carlo Felice Theater Foundation to Francesco Meli.
