Le tsar Ivan a inspiré à Serge Prokofiev une monumentale musique destinée à accompagner le dernier film de Sergueï Eisenstein. Tourné pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ce film mythique raconte les efforts faits par Ivan iv (1530-1584) pour unifier la Russie. Combats sanguinaires, complots, intrigues de palais, exécutions publiques… tout y passe pour asseoir un pouvoir central qui servira de modèle par la suite. Ivan le Terrible est en effet le premier à se déclarer « tsar de toutes les Russies ». La puissance évocatrice de la musique de Prokofiev est immense : aujourd’hui même sans image, avec l’aide du récitant, on peut aisément se replonger dans cet univers profondément russe fait de musiques religieuses, populaires et guerrières. Le chef d’orchestre de la création, Abraham Stassevitch, a réalisé cette « cantate » Ivan le Terrible en 1961, reprenant les meilleurs moments de la musique de Prokofiev.

Tsar Ivan inspired Serge Prokofiev to create monumental music to accompany Sergei Eisenstein's latest film. Shot during the Second World War, this mythical film recounts the efforts made by Ivan iv (1530-1584) to unify Russia. Bloodthirsty fights, conspiracies, palace intrigues, public executions… everything is there to establish a central power that will serve as a model later. Ivan the Terrible is indeed the first to declare himself “tsar of all the Russias”. The evocative power of Prokofiev's music is immense: even today without an image, with the help of the narrator, one can easily immerse oneself in this deeply Russian universe made up of religious, popular and warlike music. The conductor of the creation, Abraham Stassevitch, performed this "cantata"Ivan the Terrible in 1961, covering the best moments of Prokofiev's music.
