The musical tells of the events of the last seven days in the life of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem from the critical point of view of Judas. It is about the love of Mary Magdalene for Jesus, the last supper, the judgment of Herod and the betrayal of Judas, which leads to the way of the cross and ultimately to the death of Jesus.
The music of the rock opera was penned by the then unknown Andrew Lloyd Webber. Tim Rice wrote the lyrics.
Jesus Christ Superstar premiered in New York City in 1971 and was met with protests on the grounds that Judas was portrayed as a sympathetic character. Nevertheless, the rock opera was a great success and was even played on Vatican Radio. The original production had 720 performances.
The German premiere of "Jesus Christ Superstar" followed in 1972 in Münster/D and the Austrian premiere took place in 1981 in the Theater an der Wien.

Das Musical erzählt von den Ereignissen der letzten sieben Tage im Leben Jesus Christus in Jerusalem aus der kritischen Sicht des Judas. Es geht dabei um die Liebe Maria Magdalenas zu Jesu, das letzte Abendmahl, das Urteil Herodes und den Verrat von Judas, der zum Kreuzweg und letztlich zum Tod Jesu führt.
Die Musik der Rockoper stammt aus der Feder des damals noch unbekannten Andrew Lloyd Webber. Tim Rice verfasste die Liedtexte.
„Jesus Christ Superstar“ wurde 1971 in New York City uraufgeführt und stieß damals – mit der Begründung, dass Judas als sympathische Figur dargestellt wurde – auf Proteste. Dennoch wurde die Rockoper ein großer Erfolg und sogar im Radio Vatikan gespielt. Die Originalinszenierung brachte es auf 720 Aufführungen.
Die deutsche Uraufführung von „Jesus Christ Superstar“ folgte 1972 in Münster/D und die österreichische Erstaufführung fand 1981 im Theater an der Wien statt.
