Not all pianists receive acclaim from a writer like Philip Roth, moreover on the pages of one of his novels ( The Human Stain ). Merit, in Bronfman, of a steely technique combined with an impressive lucidity, which here are measured against the luminous sweetness of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, feared by Artur Schnabel for the impalpable pianissimo attack, a revolution for the canons of this literature. Two Russian gems frame it: the prelude from the opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh, which Rimsky-Korsakov dedicated to the city submerged by Lake Svetlyj Jar and thus saved from the Tatars (the "Russian Parsifal" was renamed for its Wagnerian echoes); and finally Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, known as the "fate" that knocks on the doors of the great composer.

Non capita a tutti i pianisti di ricevere acclamazioni da uno scrittore come Philip Roth, per giunta sulle pagine di un suo romanzo (La macchia umana). Merito, in Bronfman, di una tecnica d’acciaio unita a una impressionante lucidità, che qui si misurano con la luminosa dolcezza del Quarto Concerto per pianoforte di Beethoven, temuto da Artur Schnabel per l’impalpabile attacco in pianissimo, una rivoluzione per i canoni di questa letteratura. Lo incorniciano due gemme russe: il preludio dall’opera La leggenda dell’invisibile città di Kitež, che Rimskij-Korsakov dedicò alla città sommersa dal lago Svetlyj Jar e così salvata dai tatari (il “Parsifal russo” fu ribattezzata per i suoi echi wagneriani); e infine la Quarta Sinfonia di Čajkovskij, nota come il “fato” che bussa alle porte del grande compositore.
