Vor genau 100 Jahren sorgte George Gershwin mit der Uraufführung seiner »Rhapsody in Blue« für eine Sensation im Konzertsaal: Mit seinem »Jazz Concerto« schenkte er seiner Heimat das lang ersehnte genuin amerikanische Meisterwerk und sich selbst den Weltruhm. WAYNE MARSHALL, der bereits in der Eröffnungssaison der Isarphilharmonie ein umjubeltes Konzert mit Jazz im Orchestersound gab, präsentiert nun die »Rhapsody in Blue« in Personalunion als Dirigent und Solist. Was Gershwin mit seinen leichtfüßigen Stilübergängen zwischen Jazz und Klassik vorlebte, führte Leonard Bernstein weiter. Seine Suite zu »On the Waterfront« birgt außerdem einen Genreübergang von der Film- zur Konzertmusik. In der ersten Konzerthälfte erklingen mit Kurt Weill und Erich Wolfgang Korngold zwei europäische Komponisten, die nach ihrer Emigration in die USA am Broadway und in Hollywood Erfolge feierten.

Exactly 100 years ago, George Gershwin caused a sensation with the world premiere of his Rhapsody in Blue. With this “jazz concerto”, he gave his home country the long-awaited genuinely American classical masterpiece, while at the same time propelling himself to world fame.

Wayne Marshall, who already gave an acclaimed jazz concert with classical orchestra in the opening season of the Isarphilharmonie now presents the Rhapsody in Blue as both conductor and soloist.

 

Leonard Bernstein continued the theme of Gershwin’s light-footed transitions between jazz and classical music. His suite for On the Waterfront, straddles the genres of film and concert music. The concert begins with Kurt Weill and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, two European composers who enjoyed success on Broadway and in Hollywood after emigrating to the USA.
