One of the most touching opera material ever and the ideal gateway drug for opera newcomers.

In the Parisian artist scene in the Latin Quarter, things seem to be fun. One lives on air and love: the painter Marcello and Musetta quarrel and regularly reconcile loudly; the writer Rodolfo meets and falls in love with the flower embroiderer Mimì on Christmas Eve. But then it becomes tragic: Mimì has tuberculosis and cannot afford treatment. The bohemians realize the seriousness of the situation too late, and Mimì dies.

With his adaptation of Henri Murger's serialized novel ›Das Leben der Bohème‹, Giacomo Puccini created what is probably the most authentic work of the Italian opera genre »Verismo«. The emotional life of the individual characters is translated into psychologically charged and, in the best sense of the word, truthful music that you can hardly escape emotionally.

In der Pariser Künstlerszene im Quartier Latin geht es scheinbar lustig zu. Man lebt von Luft und Liebe: Der Maler Marcello und Musetta streiten und versöhnen sich regelmäßig lautstark; der Schriftsteller Rodolfo lernt am Weihnachtsabend die Blumenstickerin Mimì kennen und lieben. Doch dann wird es tragisch: Mimì ist an Tuberkulose erkrankt und kann sich keine Behandlung leisten. Zu spät erkennen die Bohemiens den Ernst der Lage, und Mimì stirbt.

Mit seiner Bearbeitung des Fortsetzungsromans ›Das Leben der Bohème‹ von Henri Murger gelang Giacomo Puccini das wohl stilechteste Werk der italienischen Operngattung »Verismo«. Das Gefühlsleben der einzelnen Figuren wird in eine psychologisch aufgeladene und im besten Sinne wahrhaftige Musik umgesetzt, der man sich emotional kaum entziehen kann.
