The premiere took place on February 1, 1896 at the Royal Theater of Turin. The young Arturo Toscanini was behind the console that evening. The professional success was not obvious: critics scolded the opera for its “stupid” and defiantly “non-opera” plot. However, a simple spectator fell in love with her: all premiere performances gave full fees.

After the Turin start, "La Boheme" conquered city after city: Buenos Aires - Rome - Moscow - London - Berlin - New York. The opera made a real sensation in France, where it was first shown in June 1898 on the stage of the Paris Comic Opéra / Opéra Comique. Claude Debussy himself, a master of the finest sound painting, admitted that he “does not know anyone who could describe Paris of that time in such a way as Puccini did in La Boheme.”

“Smoke from thousands of fireplaces in Paris is spreading in the foggy sky…” This is how one of the main characters of the opera, the poet Rudolf, creates a charming and completely impressionistic image of the city, in the spirit of the paintings of Sisley and Pissarro.
