„GROSSER SCHMERZ IN KLEINEN SEELEN“ – so beschrieb der Komponist die Handlung. La Bohème ist das Ergebnis der äußerst erfolgreichen Zusammenarbeit Giacomo Puccinis mit den Librettisten Luigi Illica und Giuseppe Giacosa, die der Operngeschichte mit der Trias La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900) und Madama Butterfly (1904) in kurzer Folge drei Meisterwerke hinterließen. Als Vorlage diente ihnen der populäre Paris-Roman Scènes de la vie de Bohème (1849) von Henri Murger. Den Spagat zwischen Lebensfreude und Todesahnung fing Puccini in einer gefühlvoll-innigen Klangsprache ein. Mal mit dickem Pinsel, mal mit zarten Farbtupfern malt er die romantisch verklärte Welt der Pariser Bohemiens.

 

PARIS IM 19. JAHRHUNDERT Es ist eine fröhliche Runde: Ein paar Studenten teilen Freud und Leid, Essen und Trinken miteinander und trotzen ihrer kargen Umgebung größtmögliche Lebensfreude ab. Ein Festtag, wenn es unverhofft ein reiches Mahl gibt – noch dazu an Weihnachten! Ist einmal Geld da, wird es sofort verprasst: Der Dichter Rodolfo, der Maler Marcello, der Philosoph Colline und der Musiker Schaunard leben den Traum vom Künstlerleben in einer Mansarde in Paris. Draußen lockt die mondäne Welt der Boulevards mit zahlreichen Restaurants und Vergnügungen.

 

EISESKÄLTE Doch in dieser Atmosphäre droht alles schnell zu verlöschen. Das Kaminfeuer, das Rodolfo mit den Seiten seines Romans gerade noch entfacht hatte, ebenso wie die Kerze Mimìs, der hübschen Nachbarin, die an seine Tür klopft, und auch die Liebe und das Leben sind allzu flüchtig. Mimì ist eine zarte Natur mit eiskaltem Händchen; die Schwindsucht raubt ihr die letzte Kraft. Immerzu ist es bitterkalt. Tröstende Wärme und glühende Leidenschaft flammen allein in Puccinis Musik auf.

La Bohème is the result of Giacomo Puccini's extremely successful collaboration with the librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, who left three masterpieces in quick succession to opera history with the triad La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900) and Madama Butterfly (1904). They used the popular Paris novel Scènes de la vie de Bohème (1849) by Henri Murger as a model. Puccini captured the balancing act between the joy of life and the premonition of death in an emotional, intimate sound language. Sometimes with a thick brush, sometimes with delicate touches of color, he paints the romanticized world of the Parisian bohemians.

 

PARIS IN THE 19TH CENTURY It's a happy group: a few students share joys and sorrows, food and drink with each other and, despite their barren surroundings, express the greatest possible joy in life. A holiday when there is unexpectedly a rich meal - especially at Christmas! Once there is money, it is immediately squandered: the poet Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the philosopher Colline and the musician Schaunard live the dream of being an artist in a garret in Paris. Outside, the sophisticated world of boulevards beckons with numerous restaurants and amusements.

 

ICE COLD But in this atmosphere everything threatens to quickly go out. The fireplace that Rodolfo had just lit with the pages of his novel, as well as the candle of Mimì, the pretty neighbor who knocks on his door, and also love and life are all too fleeting. Mimì has a delicate nature with an ice-cold hand; Consumption robs her of her last strength. It is always bitterly cold. Comforting warmth and fervent passion flare up in Puccini's music alone.
