Zwischen großer Oper und Oratorium, zwischen himmlischer Erlösung und Lust am Infernalen – mit »La damnation de Faust« schuf der für seine Exzentrik bekannte Hector Berlioz eine der eigenwilligsten »Faust«-Adaptionen. Das 1846 uraufgeführte Werk, als »dramatische Legende« bezeichnet und zunächst nur für konzertante Aufführungen gedacht, basiert zwar auf der französischen Übersetzung von Goethes Text, zerlegt die allbekannte Handlung aber in einzelne Episoden und setzt so eigene Akzente. Dasselbe gilt für Berlioz’ ungemein vielfältige und farbige Musik, die sich mit charaktervollen Solonummern und großen Chorszenen einmal in die Tiefen der Hölle begibt, um am Ende Marguerites Erlösung in den himmlischsten Tönen zu besingen.
Mit Terry Gilliams Inszenierung, die 2011 für die English National Opera entstand, kommt die erste Opernregiearbeit der Monty-Python-Legende nun auf die Bühne der Staatsoper. Ähnlich wie Thomas Mann in seinem Roman »Doktor Faustus« erzählt Gilliam eine Allegorie auf den Verfall des geistigen Deutschlands und spannt dazu einen historischen Bogen von der Romantik über den 1. Weltkrieg, das Erstarken der NSDAP und der Olympiade 1936 bis hin zum Untergang des Dritten Reiches. Den optischen Rahmen dazu bildet eine Reise durch 100 Jahre deutscher Kunstgeschichte: von der Naturromantik Caspar David Friedrichs über den provokativen Realismus eines Otto Dix und George Grosz bis hin zum politisch instrumentalisierten Pomp der Filmästhetik Leni Riefenstahls.

Between great opera and oratorio, between heavenly salvation and lust for the infernal - with "La damnation de Faust" Hector Berlioz, known for his eccentricity, created one of the most idiosyncratic adaptations of "Faust". The work, which premiered in 1846 and was described as a "dramatic legend" and initially only intended for concert performances, is based on the French translation of Goethe's text, but breaks down the well-known plot into individual episodes and thus sets its own accents. The same applies to Berlioz's extraordinarily diverse and colorful music, which, with solo numbers full of character and large choral scenes, descends into the depths of hell and finally sings of Marguerite's redemption in the most heavenly tones.
With Terry Gilliam's production, which was created in 2011 for the English National Opera, the Monty Python legend's first opera directorial work is now coming to the Staatsoper's stage. Similar to Thomas Mann in his novel "Doctor Faustus", Gilliam tells an allegory of the decline of intellectual Germany and spans a historical arc from romanticism to World War I, the strengthening of the NSDAP and the 1936 Olympics to the downfall of the Third empire. The visual framework for this is a journey through 100 years of German art history: from the natural romanticism of Caspar David Friedrich to the provocative realism of Otto Dix and George Grosz to the politically instrumentalized pomp of Leni Riefenstahl's film aesthetics.
