The opera "Pulko duktė" by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848), staged for the first time in Lithuania, has been reigning on the world's most famous stages for almost two centuries. Having gained fame in his homeland and abroad with his comic operas and historical dramas "Anna Bolena" and "Lucia di Lamermur", G. Donizetti, like his contemporaries, creators of the bel canto style Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini, tried to establish himself in one of the biggest European theaters of the time opera centers - in Paris. And he was very successful: during the two years of his life here (1838-1840), he managed to get commissions and present his work in all four opera houses of the French capital.



in 1840 In February, the premiere of the composer's first opera with a French text at the Opéra Comique was initially criticized for its poor performance. However, "Pulk's Daughter" soon became a "cash" play and remained in the theater's repertoire for a long time. The aria "Salut à la France" in the finale of the opera has become the unofficial national anthem of France. For many decades, it has been featured in performances performed in opera houses across France on the occasion of the national holiday July 14th. The opera soon gained audience sympathy in other countries as well. It is interesting that in the 19th century in the middle of the 19th century, the opera was shown not only in the opera houses of New Orleans, New York, and London, but also in the theater of Klaipėda, which belonged to the Prussian Kingdom at the time, under the direction of impresario Franz Eduard Morohn (1841–1859).



It is believed that "Pulk's Daughter" was created in just a few weeks. "I never stopped doing the work I do best; it cost me the most time and effort to create the very impression of frivolity for which I was usually scolded," the composer once admitted. This is also evidenced by the music of this opera, bursting with carefree fun, but demanding from the singers vocal skill and acting abilities that almost resemble pyrotechnic effects. The performer of the main female role, Mari, the regimental marchioness, not only has to perfectly control her voice in order to overcome all the sections of the vocal duet-like score, but also at the same time create an extremely colorful character. And her beloved Tony's party becomes a test for even the best singers in the world:



The original libretto for the opera was written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-François-Alfred Bayard. It retains all the elements of a romantic comedy: an absurd prequel (a girl found on the battlefield is raised by an entire regiment of soldiers), lovers from opposite camps who have to overcome the hostility of those around them to be friends, and a happy ending. Unlike Italian opera buffa , recitatives are sung in French opéra comiquespoken interludes are represented. The opera tells the story of the orphan Mari. Found on the battlefield and raised in the regiment of Sulpicius, a sergeant in the French army, the girl becomes his marketante - a supplier of food, clothing and supplies who travels with the regiment - and the regiment's lucky mascot. Mari falls in love with a local young man, Tony, to whom she is also indifferent. Wanting to be closer to his beloved, Tony joins the French army. However, a noble aunt, Marquise de Berkenfyld (who later turns out to be Marie's real mother) suddenly appears, takes Marie away and tries to ensure her a position in society befitting her caste. She tries to wean Mari from the orthodox manners acquired in the regiment, teaches her beautiful singing and sets her up with a groom of her caste. Mari grieves, longing for her friends and lover, but she does not dare to go against the will of her dead father and mother. But Tony doesn't give up: he breaks into the wedding party with his regimental friends and convinces everyone of his love for Mari. The Marquise relents and allows Mari to choose the man who owns her heart.



When presenting this opera to the Lithuanian audience, the director Jūratė Sodytė decided to move the place and time of the action from the Napoleonic army's military operations in Austria (1805–1815) to the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962). "The central theme of the plot of "Pulko dukters", which became a starting point for me, is the freedom of choice. For the Algerian resistance movement against the French colonists, not only the freedom of the nation was important, but also the freedom of every individual to choose. Another manifestation of freedom of choice is important in the opera: no political force or moral obligation can prevent love. In the second act, the main character of the opera, Mari, moves from wartime conditions in Algeria to a palace in Paris, where she becomes more fragile and vulnerable, although the environment here is safer and more beautiful. It's as if I emphasize the well-known truth that a person feels good in his environment, no matter how incomprehensible or uncomfortable it seems to others," the director said about her ideas. Scenographer Sigita Šimkūnaitė created a contrasting scenery for the opera: the first act reeks of tropical heat, while the second breathes the refined coldness of French high society life. The nearly 100 costumes designed by Agnes Kuzmickaitė for this performance emphasize this contrast: the military men wear stylized uniforms, the Algerian women wear traditional hijabs, and the French ladies wear dresses, suits and accessories inspired by fashion giants Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Coco Chanel, who were creating at the time. .



The vicissitudes of romantic feelings are embodied on the stage of the Klaipėda State Musical Theater by the best theater soloists and guest singers, choir and ballet artists. Following the latest trends in the world's musical theaters and in order to facilitate understanding of the content, the opera's singing numbers are performed in French, and the spoken dialogues in Lithuanian.

Pirmąkart Lietuvoje statoma italų kompozitoriaus Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) opera „Pulko duktė“ jau beveik du šimtmečius karaliauja garsiausiose pasaulio scenose. Pelnęs šlovę tėvynėje ir už jos ribų savo komiškomis operomis ir istorinėmis dramomis „Ana Bolena“ bei „Liučija di Lamermur“, G. Donizetti, kaip ir jo amžininkai, bel canto stiliaus kūrėjai Gioachino Rossini bei Vincenzo Bellini, mėgino įsitvirtinti viename didžiausių to meto Europos operos centrų – Paryžiuje. Ir jam puikiai sekėsi: per dvejus savo gyvenimo čia metus (1838–1840) jis sugebėjo gauti užsakymus ir pristatyti savo kūrybą visuose keturiuose Prancūzijos sostinės operos teatruose.



1840 m. vasarį „Opéra Comique“ teatre įvykusi pirmos kompozitoriaus operos prancūzišku tekstu premjera iš pradžių sulaukė aštrios kritikos dėl nevykusio atlikimo. Tačiau netrukus „Pulko duktė“ tapo „kasiniu“ spektakliu ir ilgam išliko teatro repertuare. Operos finale skambanti arija „Salut à la France“ (Valio Prancūzijai!) tapo neoficialiu Prancūzijos himnu. Jis daugelį dešimtmečių skambėjo spektakliuose, rodomuose visos Prancūzijos operos teatruose nacionalinės šventės Liepos 14-osios proga. Opera netruko pelnyti publikos simpatijų ir kitose šalyse. Įdomu tai, kad XIX a. viduryje opera buvo rodoma ne tik Naujojo Orleano, Niujorko, Londono operos teatruose, bet ir tuomet Prūsijos Karalystei priklausiusios Klaipėdos miesto teatre, vadovaujant impresarijui Franzui Eduardui Morohnui (1841–1859).



Manoma, kad „Pulko duktė“ buvo sukurta per vos kelias savaites. „Niekuomet netrukdavau atlikti darbo, kurį moku geriausiai; daugiausia laiko ir pastangų man kainuodavo sukurti būtent tą lengvabūdiškumo įspūdį, už kurį dažniausiai būdavau peikiamas“, – sykį prisipažino kompozitorius. Tai liudija ir šios operos muzika, trykštanti nerūpestinga linksmybe, tačiau iš dainininkų reikalaujanti kone pirotechnikos efektus primenančio vokalinio meistriškumo bei aktorinių sugebėjimų. Pagrindinio moters vaidmens – pulko markitantės Mari – atlikėja turi ne tik nepriekaištingai valdyti balsą, kad įveiktų visus vokalo daugiakovę primenančios partitūros ruožus, bet ir tuo pat metu kurti nepaprastai spalvingą personažą. O jos mylimojo Tonijo partija tampa išbandymu net geriausiems pasaulio dainininkams: jau pirmajame operos veiksme jiems tenka devynis kartus šokdinti balsą aukštyn iki antros oktavos do bene žymiausioje visų laikų tenoro arijoje „Pour mon âme“ (Mano sielai), pramintoje „tenorų Everestu“.



Originalų libretą operai sukūrė Jules’is-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges’as ir Jeanas-François-Alfredas Bayard’as. Jame išlaikomi visi romantinės komedijos elementai: absurdiška priešistorė (mūšio lauke surastą mergaitę augina visas kareivių pulkas), mylimieji iš priešingų stovyklų, kuriems tenka įveikti aplinkinių priešiškumą, kad galėtų būti drauge, ir laiminga pabaiga. Skirtingai nuo italų opera buffa, dainuojamus rečitatyvus prancūziškoje opéra comique atstoja kalbamieji intarpai. Opera pasakoja našlaitės Mari istoriją. Rasta mūšio lauke ir užauginta prancūzų armijos seržanto Sulpicijaus pulke, mergina tampa jo markitante – su pulku keliaujančia maisto, drabužių ir atsargų tiekėja – ir laimingu pulko talismanu. Mari įsimyli vietinis jaunuolis Tonijas, kuriam ir ji neabejinga. Norėdamas būti arčiau mylimosios, Tonijas įstoja į prancūzų kariuomenę. Tačiau netikėtai atsiradusi kilminga teta Markizė de Berkenfyld (vėliau paaiškėja, kad ji ir yra tikroji Mari motina) išsiveža Mari ir stengiasi užtikrinti jos luomui derančią padėtį visuomenėje. Ji mėgina atpratinti Mari nuo pulke įgytų stačiokiškų manierų, moko gražaus dainavimo ir superša ją su savo luomo jaunikiu. Mari sielvartauja, ilgėdamasi pulko draugų ir mylimojo, bet nedrįsta priešintis mirusio tėvo ir motinos valiai. Tačiau Tonijas nepasiduoda: su pulko draugais įsiveržia į vestuvių puotą ir visus įtikina savo meile Mari. Markizė atlyžta ir leidžia Mari pasirinkti tą vyrą, kuriam priklauso jos širdis.



Pristatydama šią operą Lietuvos publikai, režisierė Jūratė Sodytė sumanė perkelti veiksmo vietą ir laiką iš Napoleono armijos karo veiksmų Austrijoje (1805–1815) į Alžyro Nepriklausomybės karą (1954–1962). „Kertinė „Pulko dukters“ siužeto tema, man tapusi atspirties tašku, yra pasirinkimo laisvė. Alžyro pasipriešinimo judėjimui prieš prancūzų kolonistus buvo svarbi ne tik tautos laisvė, bet ir kiekvieno žmogaus laisvė rinktis. Operoje svarbi ir dar viena pasirinkimo laisvės apraiška: jokia politinė jėga ar moralinė pareiga negali užkirsti kelio meilei. Antrame veiksme pagrindinė operos veikėja Mari iš karo lauko sąlygų Alžyre persikelia į rūmus Paryžiuje, kur tampa trapesnė ir pažeidžiamesnė, nors aplinka čia saugesnė ir gražesnė. Tuo tarsi paryškinu visiems žinomą tiesą, kad žmogus gerai jaučiasi savoje terpėje, kad ir kokia nesuprantama ar nejauki ji atrodo aplinkiniams“, – apie savo idėjas pasakojo režisierė. Scenografė Sigita Šimkūnaitė operai sukūrė kontrastingą scenovaizdį: pirmas veiksmas tvoskia tropiniu karščiu, o antras dvelkia rafinuotu prancūzų aukštuomenės gyvenimo šaltuku. Beveik 100 Agnės Kuzmickaitės šiam spektakliui sukurtų kostiumų pabrėžia šį kontrastą: kariškiai dėvi stilizuotas uniformas, alžyrietės – tradicinius hidžabus, o prancūzų damos – tuo metu kūrusių mados grandų Yves’o Saint Laurent’o, Christiano Dioro ir Coco Chanel įkvėptas sukneles, kostiumėlius ir aksesuarus.



Romantiškų jausmų peripetijas Klaipėdos valstybinio muzikinio teatro scenoje įkūnija geriausi teatro solistai bei kviestiniai dainininkai, choro ir baleto artistai. Sekant naujausiomis pasaulio muzikinių teatrų tendencijomis ir norint palengvinti turinio suvokimą, operos dainuojamieji numeriai atliekami prancūzų kalba, o kalbamieji dialogai – lietuviškai.
