Giuseppe Verdi war auf der Suche nach einem neuen, gewagten Stoff, als er auf den Roman »La Dame aux Camélias« von Alexandre Dumas dem Jüngeren stieß. Im Frühjahr 1852 sah er dann die vom Dichter zum Schauspiel umgestaltete »Kameliendame« im Vaudeville-Theater in Paris. Der Eindruck bestärkte seinen Entschluss, sich des Stoffes für seine nächste Oper zu bedienen: Die Geschichte um Prostitution und Liebe, Krankheit und Tod gab ihm die Gelegenheit, sein großes Thema, die Liebe, die an gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen scheitert, neu zu formulieren. Er beauftragte Francesco Maria Piave mit dem Libretto und stellte in nur sechs Wochen die Partitur fertig. »La Traviata« wurde zu seiner erfolgreichsten Oper - auch an der Staatsoper Hamburg.

Violetta is the most sought-after courtesan in the Parisian half-world. But meeting Alfredo puts their drunken life in question: they fall in love and try to build a life together away from the fast-paced pleasures of the city. However, Violetta won't let go of her past. Alfredo's father persuades them to separate for the sake of family honor. Alfredo, who does not know the true background of her decision, publicly humiliates Violetta. When they both find each other again, Violetta has no more time.

Giuseppe Verdi was looking for such provocative, novel material when he came across Alexandre Dumas the Younger's novel La Dame aux Camélias. Then, in the spring of 1852, he saw the “Lady of the Camellias”, transformed from poet to play, at the Vaudeville Theater in Paris. The impression strengthened his decision to use the material for his next opera: the story gave him the opportunity to reformulate his great theme, love failing due to social resistance.
