According to his father's will, Prince Leonce of the Rich Popo is to marry Princess Lena of the Rich Pipi. But Leonce doesn't want to. It's bad enough that the steward is trying to teach him the Pythagorean theorem in preparation for taking over the reins of government! Leonce flees. What he doesn't know: Princess Lena also doesn't want to marry a foreign prince and she too has fled. The two meet without knowing who the other is.

The composer Erich Zeisl, born in Vienna in 1905, the son of a Jewish coffee house owner, was at the beginning of a promising career at the beginning of the 1930s. He wrote his comedy opera “Leonce und Lena” in 1937 shortly before emigrating to America. It was first performed in Los Angeles in 1952 in a revised version and in English. The late romantic Zeisl succeeded in translating Georg Büchner's satirical comedy about the meaning of life and love into expressive and at the same time soulful music. The work can be seen in Annaberg-Buchholz in the reconstructed German-language version as a German premiere.
