Chimney sweeps, wonderful music that quotes children's songs as well as great works of classical music, and a story like "Mary Poppins": Benjamin Britten's entertaining and touching children's opera shows how much fun opera can be! In the center: Sam, the young assistant to the evil master chimney sweep Bob Black. On his first mission, he immediately gets stuck in the chimney. But thank God, Iken Hall's children hear his cries for help and free him. And that's not all:

Benjamin Britten, one of the best-known British composers of the 20th century, not only wanted to write an opera for children, he wanted to interest children in music theater in the first place and show them how a story becomes an opera. His music is simple and sophisticated at the same time. She quotes children's songs as well as the great works of classical music. And of course children have to play and sing along too! It's a bit reminiscent of MARY POPPINS. Anyway, it all takes place in 19th-century London - and chimney sweeps play a central role. The evil master chimney sweep Black Bob and his assistant Clem let the housekeeper Miss Baggott explain the upcoming tasks to them in Iken Hall, a posh house in one of the better parts of London. But then Sam, the new assistant, has to do all the work. But when he climbs the chimney for the first time, he gets stuck in it. Thank God the children of Iken Hall hear his screams and free Sam. And that's not all: they hide him from Black Bob, Clem and Miss Baggott, and with the help of the nanny, they finally manage to smuggle Sam out of the house, freshly washed and dressed in new clothes.

Benjamin Britten, einer der bekanntesten britischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts, wollte nicht nur eine Oper für Kinder schreiben, er wollte Kinder überhaupt erst für Musiktheater interessieren und zeigen, wie aus einer Geschichte eben eine Oper wird. Seine Musik ist dabei einfach und raffiniert zugleich. Sie zitiert Kinderlieder genauso wie die großen Werke der klassischen Musik. Und natürlich müssen Kinder dabei auch mitspielen und -singen! Ein bisschen erinnert das Ganze an MARY POPPINS. Jedenfalls findet alles im London des 19. Jahrhunderts statt – und Schornsteinfeger spielen eine zentrale Rolle. Der bösartige Schornsteinfegermeister Black Bob und sein Gehilfe Clem lassen sich in Iken Hall, einem vornehmen Haus in einem der besseren Londoner Viertel, von der Haushälterin Miss Baggott die anstehenden Aufgaben erläutern. Die ganze Arbeit muss dann aber Sam, der neue Gehilfe, übernehmen. Doch als der zum ersten Mal in den Schornstein klettert, bleibt er darin stecken. Gott sei Dank hören die Kinder von Iken Hall seine Schreie und befreien Sam. Und damit nicht genug: Sie verstecken ihn vor Black Bob, Clem und Miss  Baggott, und mit Hilfe des Kindermädchens gelingt es ihnen schließlich, Sam frisch gewaschen und neu eingekleidet aus dem Haus zu schmuggeln.
