Hermann Melvilles Roman «Der weisse Wal» fand bei seinem Erscheinen 1851 kaum Beachtung. Heute gilt er als monströses Meisterwerk der Moderne. Und doch sind von den 135 Kapiteln aus den Hollywood-Filmen eigentlich nur die letzten drei bekannt. Es gibt also noch viel zu entdecken in der Lesung von Birgit Minichmayr!

Die packende Story ist zwar Lesefutter, aber wir werden von Melville nur angefüttert, um dann grandiose Reflexionen über die philosophische Bedeutung der Farbe Weiss, Abhandlungen über den Wal und das Böse oder Schilderungen von Stürmen zu lesen. Da lässt der amerikanische Autor aus dem Ozean seines Tintenfasses die ganze Welt im Wirbel seiner Satzwogen neu entstehen. Dazu schäumt und wirbelt es auch in der Musik von Sergei Rachmaninoff bis zur passend betitelten «Pièce héroique» von César Franck (1822 – 1890) ganz ordentlich.

Hermann Melville's novel "The White Whale" received little attention when it was published in 1851. Today it is considered a monstrous masterpiece of modernity. And yet of the 135 chapters from the Hollywood films, only the last three are actually known. So there is still a lot to discover in Birgit Minichmayr's reading!

The gripping story is readable, but we are fed by Melville only to then read grandiose reflections on the philosophical meaning of the color white, treatises on the whale and evil or descriptions of storms. The American author lets the whole world emerge anew from the ocean of his inkwell in the whirl of his sentence waves. In addition, it foams and swirls in the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff up to the appropriately titled "Pièce héroique" by César Franck (1822 - 1890).
