The world premiere of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor1835 was one of the greatest triumphs that the Neapolitan theater had ever experienced. Lucia's famous mad scene, one of the most touching opera scenes of all, played a major role in this success, which continues to this day. In the resumption of Tatjana Gürbaca's production - as in the premiere - the American soprano Lisette Oropesa Lucia is featured. She thrilled audiences with this role at the Royal Opera House in London and at the Teatro Real in Madrid. Benjamin Bernheim, whose international career began in the opera studio of the Zurich Opera House, will be heard as her lover. "Love, destructive and violent love, without which every opera has to stay cold": That was what Donizetti demanded of an operatic material - and that was also what Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor provided him with the utmost intensity: Lucia has fallen in love with Edgardo, her brother Enrico's mortal enemy. Edgardo is ready to overcome the hatred between the families, but Enrico is furious when he learns of his sister's love for Edgardo. Lucia is supposed to marry the rich Arturo Bucklaw, from whom her brother hopes to secure his own existence, which is threatened by debts. In the pain of her unlived love, Lucia breaks apart. No longer in control of her senses, she becomes a murderer and her own death becomes the only possible liberation from a hopeless situation.

Die Uraufführung von Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor 1835 war einer der grössten Triumphe, den das neapolitanische Theater je erlebt hatte. Grossen Anteil an diesem bis heute anhaltenden Erfolg hatte Lucias berühmte Wahnsinnsszene, eine der berührendsten Opernszenen überhaupt, deren Gestaltung für die Sängerin der Titelpartie musikalisch und darstellerisch eine immense Herausforderung bedeutet. In der Wiederaufnahme der Inszenierung von Tatjana Gürbaca ist die amerikanische Sopranistin Lisette Oropesa Lucia. Sie hat mit dieser Partie am Royal Opera House London und am Teatro Real in Madrid das Publikum begeistert. Als ihr Geliebter wird Benjamin Bernheim zu hören sein, dessen internationale Karriere einst im Opernstudio der Oper Zürich begann. Am Pult der Philharmonia Zürich steht Dirigent Andrea Sanguineti, der als Dirigent der Verdi- Gala 2020 seinen erfolgreichen Einstand in Zürich gab.

«Liebe, zerstörerisch-heftige Liebe, ohne die jede Oper kalt bleiben muss»: Das war es, was Donizetti von einem Opernstoff forderte – und das war es auch, was ihm der Roman The Bride of Lammermoor von Walter Scott in höchster Intensität lieferte: Lucia hat sich in Edgardo verliebt, den Todfeind ihres Bruders Enrico. Edgardo ist bereit, den Hass zwischen den Familien zu überwinden, doch Enrico ist vor Wut ausser sich, als er von der Liebe seiner Schwester zu Edgardo erfährt. Lucia soll den reichen Arturo Bucklaw heiraten, von dem sich ihr Bruder die Sicherung der eigenen, von Schulden bedrohten Existenz erhofft. Am Schmerz über ihre ungelebte Liebe zerbricht Lucia. Ihrer Sinne nicht mehr mächtig, wird sie zur Mörderin und ihr eigener Tod zur einzig möglichen Befreiung aus einer ausweglosen Situation.
