he "heavenly joys" in Mahler's 4th Symphony are deceptive. The final movement - a setting of Das himmlische Leben from the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn with soprano solo - describes paradise from a naive, childlike perspective. And Mahler's music reveals this naivety when a clattering fool's motif breaks with the idyllic sound. “As if from the first to the last note”, Theodor Adorno summed up the double play. The Fourth, commonly referred to as Mahler's “classical” symphony, is enriched with melodies from children's songs and thus spans the arc to Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony . At the age of 21 Britten wrote the entertaining concert piece for a school orchestra and reused compositions that he himself had made as a child. The result is a light-hearted, funny symphony en miniature with a "wild" bourrée, a "playful" pizzicato, a "sentimental" sarabande and an "exuberant" finale. The Tonhalle Concert under the baton of chief conductor Modestas Pitrenas begins with indulgent strings: Anton Webern's slow movement, played in the arrangement for string orchestra, hardly suggests that the then 22-year-old Webern will later find a musical language based on twelve-tone rows. Immediately after hiking holidays with his future wife, Webern put the sentence on paper and wrote in his diary "Two souls were married!" The sensual, late romantic, almost languid tone of the slow movement may be a reflection of the emotional world of the newly in love Webern.
