After the moderate success of OBERT and the flop of DAY OF THE KING, Verdi almost gave up his career as an opera composer. Everything changed in 1841, when the manager of La Scala gave him a libretto about the adventures of King Nebuchadnezzar and the beginnings of the Babylonian captivity of the Jews. In less than a year, NABUCCO had almost eighty performances and secured a permanent place in the repertoire of the world's greatest stages.

This majestic piece takes us back to the times when the Jewish people were under the rule of the Babylonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar. The longing of the Israelites for their lost freedom is intertwined here with court intrigues, lust for power and love dilemmas of the king's daughters. Although the action takes place in the 6th century BC, it actually refers to the liberation movements that sought to unify Italy under the rule of Victor Emmanuel II. During its premiere, the content of the work, identified by the Italians with their own fate, today - now devoid of any political context - makes an equally unforgettable impression among the viewers.

Niewiele brakowało, by po umiarkowanym sukcesie OBERTA i klapie DNIA KRÓLOWANIA Verdi zarzucił karierę kompozytora operowego. Wszystko zmieniło się w 1841 roku, kiedy menedżer La Scali podsunął mu libretto o perypetiach króla Nabuchodonozora i początkach niewoli babilońskiej Żydów. NABUCCO w niespełna rok doczekał się prawie osiemdziesięciu przedstawień i zapewnił sobie stałe miejsce w repertuarze największych światowych scen.

Ten majestatyczny utwór pozwala nam cofnąć się do czasów, gdy lud żydowski znajdował się pod panowaniem babilońskiego władcy Nabuchodonozora. Tęsknota Izraelitów za utraconą wolnością przeplata się tutaj z dworskimi intrygami, żądzą władzy oraz rozterkami miłosnymi córek króla. Choć akcja toczy się w VI wieku p.n.e., w rzeczywistości nawiązuje do ruchów wolnościowych, które zmierzały do zjednoczenia Włoch pod panowaniem Wiktora Emanuela II. W okresie swojej premiery treść dzieła utożsamiana przez Włochów z własnym losem, dziś – już pozbawiona politycznego kontekstu – wywołuje wśród widzów równie niezapomniane wrażenie.
