The German Requiem by Johannes Brahms deviates from the traditional form of the funeral mass. This timeless piece of universal character will be performed by pianists together with the NFM Choir conducted by Lionel Sowa. First, however, we will hear a motet considered a masterpiece of a cappella choral music, sometimes called a "small German requiem".

While Johannes Brahms was putting the finishing touches to his Second Symphony , his largest and most powerful unaccompanied choral composition was published. Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen? is a four-movement a capella piece based on biblical texts. The artist adopted and adapted the pattern of the great master of the motet genre - Johann Sebastian Bach. It touches on the issues of life and death - based on the fate of the biblical Job, with whom the composer identified himself. The track begins with a piercing scream: Warum? ( Why? ). Brahms, recalling his work, lamented: "In the Book of Job you will find this 'Warum' - but no answer."

The German Requiemis a choral composition that marks a turning point in Brahms' career. It is considered by many to be his greatest achievement. From the first performance it was met with enthusiasm and sealed the artist's position as one of the leading composers of his generation. The final version consists of seven parts arranged symmetrically around the fourth, central link. Contrary to the title, it is not a funeral mass, but a lyrical reflection on death, addressed not to the dead, but to the living. Brahms skilfully selected texts from the Old and New Testaments in Martin Luther's translation, avoiding unequivocally Christian messages, thus giving the work a universal dimension. The creator himself preferred to call it a "human requiem".

Niemieckie Requiem Johannesa Brahmsa odbiega od tradycyjnej formy mszy żałobnej. Ten ponadczasowy utwór o uniwersalnym charakterze wykonają pianiści wraz z Chórem NFM pod batutą Lionela Sowa. Najpierw jednak zabrzmi motet uważany za arcydzieło muzyki chóralnej a cappella, nazywany niekiedy „małym niemieckim requiem”.

Podczas gdy Johannes Brahms nadawał ostatnie szlify swojej II Symfonii, ukazała się jego największa i najpotężniejsza kompozycja chóralna bez akompaniamentu. Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen? to czteroczęściowy utwór a capella oparty na tekstach biblijnych. Artysta przyjął i zaadaptował wzór wielkiego mistrza gatunku motetu – Johanna Sebastiana Bacha. Poruszone w nim zostały kwestie życia i śmierci – w oparciu o losy biblijnego Hioba, z którym kompozytor sam się identyfikował. Utwór rozpoczyna się przejmującym krzykiem: Warum? (Dlaczego?). Brahms, wspominając o swoim dziele, ubolewał: „W Księdze Hioba znajdziesz to «Warum» – ale żadnej odpowiedzi”.

Z kolei Niemieckie Requiem to kompozycja chóralna stanowiąca punkt zwrotny w karierze Brahmsa. Przez wielu uważane jest za jego największe osiągnięcie. Od czasu pierwszego wykonania spotkało się z entuzjazmem i przypieczętowało pozycję artysty jako jednego z czołowych kompozytorów swojego pokolenia. Ostateczna wersja składa się z siedmiu części ułożonych symetrycznie wokół czwartego, centralnego ogniwa. Wbrew tytułowi nie jest to msza żałobna, ale liryczna refleksja nad śmiercią, skierowana nie do umarłych, a do żywych. Brahms umiejętnie dobrał teksty ze Starego i Nowego Testamentu w tłumaczeniu Marcina Lutra, unikając przesłań jednoznacznie chrześcijańskich, tym samym nadając dziełu uniwersalny wymiar. Sam twórca wolał, by określono je mianem „ludzkiego requiem”.
