Audace de la découverte
Cette redécouverte en première française que nous offrent Benjamin Lazar et Philippe Jaroussky d’un nouvel Orphée est un événement à plus d’un titre.

Trente ans après Le Couronnement de Poppée de Monteverdi, cet Orfeo vénitien de la fin du 17e siècle, où le chant expressif met en relief le texte, révèle la liberté de ton propre à la République de Venise, qui fait merveille dans les livrets, mêlant sérieux et dérision, lumière et ombres.

Les personnages, dont le fond des âmes se révélera au fur et à mesure, sont des protagonistes d’une grande modernité, avec deux femmes admirablement fortes et solidaires, prêtes à lutter pour leur amour et leur vie.

Transmission
Fidèle à sa démarche depuis sa création, l’Arcal a réuni autour de cette partition – peu connue mais selon Philippe Jaroussky, idéale pour de jeunes chanteurs ­– trois structures capables
d’allonger la vie de ce spectacle après sa création en première française à l’Opéra de Montpellier.

Dans une re-création avec 11 jeunes chanteurs en tournée dans le réseau des théâtres, sont donc réunies :

– la Fondation Royaumont qui apporte son savoir-faire en formation, ses mécènes et une aide à la diffusion ;

– la Scène nationale de Sénart qui ose l’opéra offrant une coproduction et son plateau pour 2 semaines de répétitions pour la re-création ;

– l’Arcal qui confirme son expertise dans la production et la diffusion d’une tournée pour les scènes généralistes, et l’accompagnement de jeunes artistes.

Ce sont donc 10 représentations supplémentaires en 2023-24 avec une jeune distribution et une tournée en cours de construction pour 2024-25 qui permettent une plus grande exposition d’un répertoire encore à découvrir et offrent l’expérience répétée et nécessaire de la scène pour de jeunes artistes.
Et c’est sans doute le genre de l’opéra, qui sortira gagnant devant un public élargi.

Retour aux sources et nouveaux chemins
Alors, célébrons ici l’esprit de transmission qui anime Philippe Jaroussky et permet de retrouver le fil de ses premiers rôles il y a 20 ans à Royaumont (avec Gérard Lesne et Jean-Claude Malgoire) et à l’Arcal (avec Jean-Christophe Spinosi dans La Verità in cimento). De même Benjamin Lazar retrouve le chemin de Royaumont 20 ans après son audacieux et emblématique Bourgeois Gentilhomme.

Célébrons aussi, la confirmation du chemin de chef d’orchestre emprunté en 2021 par Philippe Jaroussky, à la tête de son Ensemble Artaserse, stature adoubée en 2022 lors de sa direction du Jules César de Haendel.

Célébrons enfin, les retrouvailles du duo

Jaroussky–Lazar, engagés tous deux il y a quinze ans, dans Sant’Alessio de Stefano Landi en 2007, et qui grâce à leur esprit de recherche et leur travail ont fait renaître l’opéra du 17e siècle.

Avec l’Arcal et ses partenaires, quelques fées veillent sur le berceau de l’opéra, particulièrement secoué en cette période post-pandémie.

Audacity of discovery
This rediscovery in French premiere that Benjamin Lazar and Philippe Jaroussky offer us of a new Orpheus is an event in more than one way.

Thirty years after Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppaea , this Venetian Orfeo from the end of the 17th century , where the expressive singing highlights the text, reveals the freedom of tone specific to the Republic of Venice, which works wonders in the librettos, mixing seriousness and derision, light and shadows.

The characters, whose deep souls will be revealed gradually, are protagonists of great modernity, with two admirably strong and supportive women, ready to fight for their love and their lives.

Transmission
Faithful to its approach since its creation, Arcal has brought together around this score – little known but according to Philippe Jaroussky, ideal for young singers – three structures capable of
extending the life of this show after its French premiere at the Montpellier Opera.

In a re-creation with 11 young singers on tour in the theater network, the following are brought together:

– the Royaumont Foundation which provides its training know-how, its patrons and support for dissemination;

– the Scène nationale de Sénart which dares the opera offering a co-production and its stage for 2 weeks of rehearsals for the re-creation;

– Arcal which confirms its expertise in the production and distribution of a tour for general scenes, and the support of young artists.

These are therefore 10 additional performances in 2023-24 with a young cast and a tour under construction for 2024-25 which allow greater exposure of a repertoire yet to be discovered and offer the repeated and necessary experience of the stage for young artists.
And this is undoubtedly the genre of opera that will emerge as a winner in front of a wider audience.

Back to basics and new paths
So, let's celebrate here the spirit of transmission that drives Philippe Jaroussky and allows us to rediscover the thread of his first roles 20 years ago at Royaumont (with Gérard Lesne and Jean-Claude Malgoire) and at Arcal (with Jean-Christophe Spinosi in La Verità in cemento ). Likewise Benjamin Lazar returns to Royaumont 20 years after his audacious and emblematic Bourgeois Gentilhomme .

Let us also celebrate the confirmation of the path as conductor taken in 2021 by Philippe Jaroussky, at the head of his Ensemble Artaserse, a stature dubbed in 2022 during his direction of Handel's Julius Caesar .

Let's finally celebrate the reunion of the duo

Jaroussky–Lazar, both engaged fifteen years ago, in Sant'Alessio by Stefano Landi in 2007, and who thanks to their spirit of research and their work brought back to life 17th century opera .

With Arcal and its partners, a few fairies watch over the cradle of opera, particularly shaken in this post-pandemic period.
