Orpheus and Eurydice have had better days. Affairs and disputes shape everyday marriage. The unfaithful music teacher is so happy when he learns that his wife has been kidnapped into the underworld by the god of hell Pluto. But the enthusiasm does not last, because public opinion is already standing before him and appealing to his morals. Inevitably, Orpheus makes his way to Olympus to get his wife back. The comic opera “Orpheus in the Underworld” advanced to global success with its parody of the political conditions of the Second Empire, the caricatures of mythological figures and the exposure of pseudo social morality. But who or what is public opinion today in a world in which a clear moral authority seems to have disappeared?
