The orchestra's elemental force tears the silence apart like an outcry, from one moment to the next the storm rages off the coast of Cyprus. The wind whips, lightning cuts through the tossed sky: Giuseppe Verdi anticipated the turmoil in the hearts of his characters in the revolting nature. His penultimate opera, with which he took up the music-dramatic word again after a long creative break, grabs the listener by the throat and does not let go until the inevitable end. Like Otello, the successful general, caught in Jago's intrigues; how the ominous seed of jealousy flourishes and Otello's love for his wife Desdemona begins to decompose on the wedding day; like Desdemona, "although she suspects or senses that this disaster is approaching her and that Otello is in a position to kill her out of jealousy,Otello created an opera drama that was not known until then in a more concise, direct, intense and beautiful way and is still unsurpassed today

Wie ein Aufschrei zerreißt die Urgewalt des Orchesters die Stille, von einem Moment zum anderen tobt der Sturm vor der Küste Zyperns. Der Wind peitscht, Blitze zerschneiden den umtosten Himmel: Giuseppe Verdi hat den Aufruhr in den Herzen seiner Figuren in der revoltierenden Natur vorweggenommen. Seine vorletzte Oper, mit der er nach langer Schaffenspause wieder das musikdramatische Wort ergriff, packt den Hörer an der Gurgel und lässt ihn bis zum unausweichlichen Ende nicht mehr los. Wie Otello, der erfolgreiche Feldherr, sich im Intrigengespinst Jagos verfängt; wie der unheilvolle Samen der Eifersucht gedeiht und Otellos Liebe zu seiner Frau Desdemona schon am Hochzeitstag zu zersetzen beginnt; wie Desdemona, „obwohl sie ahnt oder spürt, dass dieses Unheil auf sie zukommt und dass Otello in der Lage ist, sie aus Eifersucht umzubringen, dennoch insistiert“ (Amélie Niermeyer) – Verdi hat mit seinem Otello ein Operndrama geschaffen, wie es knapper, direkter, intensiver und schöner bis dahin nicht gekannt war und bis heute unübertroffen ist.
