A further tour d'horizon in a class of its own is on the cards when this year’s Beethoven-Bartók cycle by the Wiener Symphoniker enters its next round with Artist in Residence Pierre-Laurent Aimard. At its centre is Beethoven's only piano concerto in a minor key, Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor. Providing a contrast: the Divertimento for Strings that goes far beyond the generic idea of "entertainment" and the "hellish" Dance of the Girl from the Miraculous Mandarin, the premiere of which in 1926 ended in a veritable scandal.
