About This Event
The first performance of any new work by Steve Reich is an event. The centrepiece of this Prom from the BBC Symphony Orchestra is Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder, the composer’s ‘dream of ascending and descending a ladder between heaven and earth’ that was deemed ‘energetic, meditative, light, graceful and refreshing’ when premiered in New York last spring. Music by Stravinsky and Schumann – equally bright and refreshing – frame this new work, including the latter’s symphonic triumph over illness and adversity, his galvanising Symphony No. 2.
