Opera
One of the most stimulating works of the mid-nineteenth century, Rigoletto was initially fought by the censorship of the time, which for aesthetic and political reasons had much to object to its content. Set in the brilliant world of the Duke of Mantua, absolute ruler with no moral scruples, the action plunges into the abyss of crime, but the libertine escapes punishment because the angelic girl Gilda will pay for his misdeeds. Commissioned in 1850 by the Fenice, Rigoletto is the first opera of the mature Verdi and marks the transition from the 'usual form' of aria-cabaletta towards more articulated dramatic structures. Verdi wrote the bulk of the score in just forty days; the first was a triumph, and since then Rigolettoit has never known eclipse of popularity.
