Verdi's seventeenth opera, together with the other two works of the "popular trilogy" ("Il trovatore", "La traviata"), enabled the composer to achieve absolute world fame.

Behind the melodies is the gripping tragedy of love that leads to death: the father's protective love, the daughter's first great love. Both recognize the deceit, the father commissions the murder of the seducer, the daughter, who wants to warn the duke, is herself hit by the knife that was supposed to avenge her honor.

For the 2009 premiere, Stephen Langridge and Richard Hudson created a world in which power and glamor collide with the misery of the marginalized.
