Our ancestors invented myths to understand the world - a world that was liveable and loveable, but sometimes also mysterious and hostile. Against the will of Zeus, Prometheus created humans and gave them fire. A terrible punishment was the consequence. Ludwig van Beethoven celebrated the Titan and his heroic deed in a ballet. And his Fourth Piano Concerto is probably based on the legend of Orpheus: in the middle movement the piano pleads in the underworld for the release of his beloved Eurydice. Robert Schumann's Symphony in D minor also sounds like a myth that peels out of misty veils before the sun bursts through in the finale. Ensuring that Prometheus's fire blazes throughout are Rudolf Buchbinder and the Staatskapelle Dresden under Daniele Gatti.

Mit Mythen haben sich unsere Ahnen die Welt erklärt – die lebens- und liebenswerte, manchmal aber auch rätselhafte, ja feindselige Welt. Prometheus hat die Menschen erschaffen und ihnen das Feuer gebracht, gegen den Willen des Zeus – eine schreckliche Strafe war die Folge. Ludwig van Beethoven feierte den Titanen und seine Heldentat in einem Ballett. Und seinem vierten Klavierkonzert dürfte die Sage von Orpheus zugrunde liegen: Im Mittelsatz fleht das Klavier in der Unterwelt um die Freigabe der geliebten Eurydike. Auch Robert Schumanns d-Moll-Symphonie klingt wie ein Mythos, der sich aus anfänglichen Nebelschleiern schält, bevor im Finale die Sonne durchbricht. Rudolf Buchbinder und die Staatskapelle Dresden unter Daniele Gatti garantieren dafür, dass hier wie dort Prometheus’ Feuer lodert.
