Die Uraufführung der Salome im Jahr 1905 muss überwältigend gewesen sein: Richard Strauss schrieb für dieses Drama eine ekstatische Musik, die mit allem bis dahin Bekannten brach. Das gleichnamige Stück von Oscar Wilde, das Strauss als Vorlage gedient hatte, galt als anrüchig und war in England jahrelang von der Zensur verboten. Es handelt von der biblischen Prinzessin Salome, die als Lohn für ihren erotischen Tanz von König Herodes den Kopf des Propheten Jochanaan fordert. Salome küsst das blutende Haupt, bevor der schockierte Herodes sie töten lässt. Strauss hat sich in seiner Partitur ganz auf den Konflikt zwischen Salome und Jochanaan konzentriert: Grandios klangsinnlich und in rauschhaften Steigerungen fasst er die Psyche der Protagonistin in Töne.

In dieser Wiederaufnahme gibt es eine Wiederbegegnung mit der Sopranistin Catherine Naglestad, die in Zürich zuletzt als Tosca Erfolge feierte und zuvor als Minnie in La fanciulla del West überzeugte. Nun singt sie auch an unserem Opernhaus erstmals die Salome, die zu ihren glanzvollsten Rollen gehört. Thomas Johannes Mayer, der in letzter Zeit vor allem im Wagner-Fach Aufsehen erregte, debütiert als Jochanaan. Die charismatische Sängerdarstellerin Doris Soffel – in Zürich war sie die Gräfin in Pique Dame – übernimmt die Herodias. Die musikalische Leitung hat, erstmals am Opernhaus Zürich, der Generalmusikdirektor und Intendant der Oper Leipzig, Ulf Schirmer.

The premiere of Salome in 1905 must have been overwhelming: Richard Strauss wrote ecstatic music for this drama that broke with everything known at the time. The play of the same name by Oscar Wilde, which Strauss had used as a model, was considered disreputable and was banned by the censors in England for years. It is about the biblical princess Salome, who demands the head of the prophet Jochanaan from King Herod as a reward for her erotic dance. Salome kisses the bleeding head before the shocked Herod has her killed. In his score, Strauss concentrated entirely on the conflict between Salome and Jochanaan: he captured the protagonist's psyche in tones in a grandiosely sensual manner and in intoxicating escalations.

In this revival there is a reunion with the soprano Catherine Naglestad, who most recently celebrated successes as Tosca in Zurich and previously had a convincing role as Minnie in La fanciulla del West . Now she is singing Salome for the first time at our opera house, which is one of her most brilliant roles. Thomas Johannes Mayer, who has recently caused a stir in the Wagner field, makes his debut as Jochanaan. The charismatic singer-actress Doris Soffel – in Zurich she was the Countess in the Queen of Spades – takes on Herodias. The musical direction has, for the first time at the Zurich Opera House, the General Music Director and Artistic Director of the Leipzig Opera, Ulf Schirmer.
