The conductor Alondra de la Parra is Mexican, and she certainly sees this as an assignment. She regularly performs South American or South American-inspired music, and in this New Year's Eve concert she is also putting some of her favorite works on the program. The “Sinfonía India” by Carlos Chávez, for example, is a core work of the Mexican repertoire. Bernstein was a good friend of Chávez, and his sympathy for South American rhythms cannot be ignored in the symphonic dances from “West Side Story”. George Gershwin also liked to listen to the south - and without Astor Piazzolla nothing works on such an evening anyway. There's only one thing to do: prick up your ears, tap along - and then toast to the New Year!
