Tonight, let yourself be swept away by Shostakovich's intense and tumultuous Symphony No. 8. Written amid the blood, fire and steel of the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1943, this is a work of profound depth that simultaneously captures the intimate and personal. In its rawness and realness, it offers an extraordinary example of how music can transport you through history, revealing the humanity within.

Cellist Mischa Maisky is a living legend who has been gracing the world's major stages for fifty years. He is known for his warm, expressive and virtuosic performances, laying bare the soul of the music. Melancholic and evocative, Schelomo is a perfect match for Maisky's talent and flair. Composed by Ernest Bloch in 1916, it translates King Schelomo's voice and thoughts into the solid, deep sound of the cello. The orchestra paints the world around him, the Jewish people responding to him. The evening will open with Through Absence, a new piece written especially for the Residentie Orkest by one of the Netherlands' exceptionally talented young composers, Amarante Nat.

Vanavond hoor je de kolossale, scheurende klanken van Sjostakovitsj’ Achtste symfonie. Een stuk dat geschreven is op bloed, vuur en staal tijdens de Duitse aanval op de Sovjet Unie in 1943, maar dat tegelijkertijd het kleine en persoonlijke weergeeft. Diepgang in donkere tijden, rauw en echt. Daarmee een absoluut bijzonder voorbeeld van hoe muziek je mee kan nemen in de geschiedenis en alle menselijkheid die daarachter schuilgaat.

Cellist Mischa Maisky is een levende legende die al vijftig jaar op alle grote podia soleert. Hij staat bekend om zijn expressieve, warme en virtuoze spel, waarmee hij de ziel van de muziek blootlegt. De weemoedige maar weelderige Schelomo is een perfecte match voor Maiskys instrumentale zangkunst (en gevoel voor flair). Een muziekstuk geschreven door Ernest Bloch in 1916, waarin de cello de stem en gedachten van koning Schelomo vertaalt in vaste, diepe tonen. Het orkest schildert de wereld om hem heen, het joodse volk dat terugspreekt. De avond opent met nieuw werk van een van Nederlands bijzondere compositietalenten Amarante Nat, speciaal geschreven voor het Residentie Orkest: Through Absence.
